George Smith, 69, a farm laborer from near Harcourt, Iowa, wins a $250 award from a district court jury in a $2,000 personal injury case against former employer Arthur F. Nelson. Smith sought compensation for injuries from the tumbling rod of a corn elevator.
Jimmy Edson an 11-year-old Storm Lake rescuer was nominated by the Iowa senate for the Carnegie bravery award. Joined by George Phinney the boy he saved, he was introduced by Senator A J Shaw in Des Moines.
In Des Moines lawmakers in the Iowa senate and house suggested a week off around March 1. A new member joked that some go home to collect a March 1 interest while others go home to pay it, highlighting mid-session absences.
Sidney Chester Boyd awaiting sentence for attempted murder slashed his throat with a razor in the county jail. He is in serious condition at a Hamburg hospital. Sheriff A. Christopher said Boyd was convicted in a case stemming from a June knifing that injured Forest Anspach of Hamburg.
Arthur W. Black, 40, was held for investigation after allegedly terrorizing the neighborhood with a pistol. His wife said he fired two shots inside their home and, fearing suicide, she summoned help. Neighbors said he fired several more shots on the porch, all missing. Black surrendered to officers without resistance.
The Fans' Frolic, sponsored by the Clayton County board of education, will be held at Elkader High School gymnasium. More than 450 people are expected. G. B. Lyons of Cresco will be toast master, and A. K. Rosey Rowswell of Pittsburgh’s NBC will be the principal speaker.
Secretary of Commerce Hopkins delaying his Des Moines and Grinnell appearance due to increased official duties in Washington. Grinnell College officials were notified he would not arrive until Tuesday, with plans to welcome the former graduate and Towan alum.
Charles Knoebel 51, a painter, was fatally struck at an intersection by a car that fled the scene. He had just said goodbye to his wife who watched from a window as he returned to work. He died three hours after being hospitalized.
DES MOINES George Busch age 23 coach at Dowling high school and former Creighton University athlete died from an infection contracted over two weeks ago from a blister on his foot.
An organization to do educational work for the sheep industry in Iowa will be formed here. Represented groups include the Iowa Sheep Wool Growers Association and the Iowa Lamb Breeders Association.
A two story Robert Wehrman building in Manning's business district burned today, with losses over 50000. Fireman Andy Jensen was overcome by smoke. several others lightly burned. The blaze began 5 40 am and was under control by 10 30 am aided by Audubon and Manilla.
The American Legion committee postpones the George Washington birthday party for wives and children due to a conflicting meeting February 22. Chairman S. W. Kaster announces the withdrawal of proposed party plans.
An estimated 13200 people attended the John Deere day free shows for farmers held at the Methodist church yesterday. About 1365 lunches were served including two sandwiches, doughnuts, roll and coffee. Five educational and one comedy film were shown at each session with ten door prizes awarded. John Deere displays lined the street near 210 North Marion Avenue as sponsors praised orderly attendance. Representatives from John Deere offices and region staff assisted in arrangements and crowd control.
Commercial Flock Owners and Purebred Breeders formed a parent organization for the sheep industry at Ames during Arm and Home Week at Iowa State College noting a decision to unite under a single body.
Ames Iowa February 18. The annual farm and home week observance of the Iowa rural youth organization heard speakers urge courage and opportunity for young Americans. Emery W Baldur warned of threats but said a dauntless spirit will make youths victorious adults. C V Gregory predicted a shift in success toward welfare contributions rather than wealth. Rev Jack Finegan noted insecurity for youths but urged developing new opportunities and patience for meaningful results.
A senate committee proposes to split the state motor vehicle department from the Secretary of State and place it under the Governor. The bill creates an independent department with a commissioner appointed by the governor and approved by two thirds of the senate, with broad administrative powers and control of records.
Des Moines February 18 Senator Earl Augustine Democrat of Oskaloosa announced he will introduce a bill to create a nine member censure board to review all motion pictures shown in Iowa. He cites criminologists blaming crime on certain films and seeks state regulation.
In Chicago on February 1840 a hold up man captured after shooting a patron and terrorizing a dozen others in a north side tavern was identified by police as William Blatz. He is among five men who escaped January from the Lima, Ohio state insane asylum. A police squad arrested him after a married couple alerted authorities.
Mr. and Mrs. Clint Fihen and Lorene Taylor joined Mrs. Claire Holmes of Crawfordsville Mrs. Elmer Nevins of West Chester and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Blankenhorn of Ainsworth among many travelers who spent yesterday in town visiting locals.
A Vatican official announced the conclave to elect Pope Pius XI's successor would open late on March 1 with 62 cardinals and 237 people isolated from the world. some expect a February 28 start if American hemisphere cardinals arrive in time and 175 workers will assist the conclave.
General Malin Craig testified before the senate military affairs committee that a U S night bombing plane sold to France was one of the army's newest two valuable air assets. The Jan 28 secret hearing discussed how France obtained cooperation from various government departments to buy 600 military planes.
Paris reports President Manuel Hzana of the republic threatens to break with Premier Juan Negrin if peace talks fail. Hzana may declare Negrin government in rebellion and seeks peace talks with France and Britain if Negrin agrees.
Fifteen Wayland high school occupations students toured the Evening Journal plant in Washington yesterday. Supt. Ellis accompanied the group to observe newsroom operations from the news office through typographic, stereotyping, advertising, make up, photographic and press stages. Journal staff members joined to answer questions and share insights into the newspaper business.
Dr John A Morrison of Chicago spoke on Developments in Soviet Russia in a lecture at the school auditorium, presenting slides from his 1937 geological survey. He described Russia as geographically immense with vast mineral wealth and coal, a growing industry, and a population of 170 million across 180 languages.
The Knights of Columbus hold a rosary for J E Wolf this evening at 8 30 in the Jones Funeral chapel. Wolf was found dead in his Excelsior Springs Mo home yesterday and was brought to Washington for services at St James Church on Monday at 9 30 a m. A rosary will be recited tomorrow evening at 5 o'clock in the Jones chapel.
Edward A. ONeal president of the American Farm Bureau said the nation faces a major problem balancing agriculture and labor. He argued labor wage and hour policies have reduced production, while agriculture seeks abundant output. He spoke at the institute's final session as Frances Perkins urged confidence in improving national conditions.
Masons and Knights of Pythias are summoned to attend the funeral of Frank L. Broadgate. Masons meet at the Temple at 1 30 PM and proceed to Sherman's Funeral Home for the service at 2 PM. Knights meet at the ball at 1 30 PM to join the procession.
Florida City police and secret service pursued a man through dense underbrush near the Roosevelt breakfast gathering. The suspect fired as officers closed in, but escaped along the wagon road amid a joint chase involving a presidential train crew. Roosevelt continued to Key West, boarding the cruiser Houston later that day.
In a recent Senate speech Senator A. Claire Dewey describes bureaucratic threats as harming Iowa’s welfare. He urges passage of a bill to eliminate the Iowa State Planning Board, arguing the ban wastes money and fails of useful purpose. Paul Lytle worked at Dubuque while Mrs. Lytle, a local teacher, spends the weekend there.
Funeral services for Frank Broadgate who died yesterday will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sherman Funeral Home with Rev. Carl W. Kile and Rev. J. Fredmund officiating. Additional services will follow at Spencer Memorial Day afternoon. Broadgate, born June 18, 18__, to Hat W. and Frances Broadgate, lived in Castalia Iowa before marrying Minnie J. Connell in 1903 at Spencer. He worked as a registered pharmacist early in marriage, later became an electrical contractor in Washington for the past twenty years, and belonged to St. Stephen's Church in Spencer and Washington Lodge No. 26 A.F. and A.M. He was ill for five to six weeks. Surviving: wife Minnie and one brother John D. Broadgan of Milford Iowa.
