Pittsfield Massachusetts swings against Anthony Bimba editor and lecturer from Brooklyn charged with blasphemy under a 300 year old blue law. Police raid the American Lithuanian literary society gathering of 130 but no arrests were made. Dudley Field Malone was listed among speakers for forthcoming mass meetings.
In Ottumwa Iowa on February 20 a joint meeting discussed a proposed March 16 special election in Wapello County to vote on a one million dollar bond issue for hard surfacing the local primary road system. Delegations from Jefferson County were expected and enthusiasm grows in Keokuk Mahaska and Monroe counties as well.
President Coolidge, though his condition improved, stays in his room nursing a cold and cancels engagements. White House officials say he will take precautions so he can address the National Education Association department meeting Monday night.

Des Moines Iowa reports 1925 census figures showing 8,832,162 hogs on January 1 valued at 83 million dollars. In 1924 farms sold 9,646,631 hogs for 148 million dollars. Of the population 2,853,297 were under six months and 1,676,277 were breeding sows and gilts six months and over with 16,205,258 other six months over animals including boars.
Police acting on government orders began arrests in a graft scandal tied to the purchase of fifty Fokker airplanes for the army. The 1930s affair involves alleged corruption surrounding last year’s procurement, with many aircraft deemed defective.

Duschn er testified the shooting was not planned and occurred in self defense after Dolenc threw a hammer and advanced. He wept while on the stand.

Attorney Arthur Garfield Hayes argues her elopement with the Earl of Craven in 1922 was not a federal crime, with possible further appeals. Meanwhile 251 people were deported for moral turpitude, three to one men over women, per the Labor Department.
Weather for week beginning Monday in the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys shows some rain possible in the south and snow or rain in the north at the start and end of the week. Overall temperatures stay above normal with a cold spell expected Tuesday or Wednesday.

Fraternities are blamed for most drinking and cooperation of fraternities is seen as essential to curb violations of prohibition laws. Delegates say moral standing of colleges remains strong.
Two men are missing after a blaze at the Arnold Hotel in East St Louis early today. Three others were severely injured and six guests fled in night clothing as the $130,000 fire destroyed part of the hotel. Missing are H. L. Cole day clerk and B. L. Cato an Illinois Central railroad engineer. hotel proprietor A C Arnold says others might be missing. Police report an unconfirmed rumor of five more missing.
Federal agents halted a large get rich quick scheme with hundreds of victims. Don L. Roberts 23 Fargo North Dakota vice president of Minnimaker Business Opportunities Co faced mail fraud charges and a similar warrant was issued for J H Grubbs of Fargo presumed in Cuba. Roberts arraigned before United States commissioner Carl Noble with bond set at 5 000 and case continued to February 25.
Francis Derwent Wood, renowned sculptor, died today in London from complications after an operation. Born in Keswick in 1871 to an American father and English mother, he married Florence Schmidt in 1903. He was a Royal Academy member with notable works including four arts statues for Glasgow Galleries, the Chamberlain bust for the London Guild Hall, and the Pitt statue for Washington marking peace centenary.
Biddeford reports say Joseph Labbe, coast guardsman, is up for a Carnegie medal after he walked barefoot through snow for 12 hours to aid five companions when his boat C-126 wrecked off the Rhode Island coast during the blizzard. Antonio Labbe, his brother, was briefly named as defendant in court but the correction followed.

Residents of Omaha and Council Bluffs live in terror as an unidentified maniacal sniper fires from behind objects, killing two, wounding two, and targeting others. Rosas Johnson, a Wabash railroad special agent, was shot six times, with authorities linking a spent .22 cartridge to the earlier homicides of William McDevitt and Dr. A D Searles. Johnson’s condition remains precarious as investigators pursue a prime suspect near the Johnson shooting scene.
W. E. Riegel of Tolono Illinois leads the second two week farmer business short course at Iowa State College with 13 farmers enrolled. The program aims to teach better bookkeeping and profitable farming through hands on accounting practice and lectures from campus agricultural experts.
Chicago February 19 A traffic cop McCady dining on oysters heard a burst of joy when a jeweler declared a pearl found in the shellfish worth 200 dollars. He celebrated by ordering another dozen raw.
