Senate set to debate a bill extending rent controls to April 30 1949 while House clears an 80-day stop gap measure. The vote comes as House meets on routine business and Senate adjourns until tomorrow.
John M. McClintic 71, retired merchant and 41-year Wayland resident, died Wednesday after a heart attack. Funeral services set for Friday at his Wayland home and 2:05 pm at Wayland Methodist Church with Rev. J J Pritchard and Rev. Virgil Henderson. Burial in Wayland Cemetery. Surviving children Roy, Harry, and Mabel. sisters Mrs. Wilma McCoy and Mr. Ed Wolfe. Stacy Funeral Home in charge.
The Washington County Farm Stores Inc announces a public visit to its new store and service building on East Washington Street. Sam Edelman, local manager, says the company purchased the J I Case farm machinery franchise from L C Willits and nears completion of the new building. The opening is tentatively set for March 18 while operations begin. Ben M Miller of Xa jon a is president with LeRoy Miller as vice president. Edelman notes past ownership of Kalona Oil Co.
Mrs. Walter Sheets 51 lifelong Dutch Creek resident died at 1:00 am at her home after years of illness. Funeral services set for 2:00 pm Saturday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Milo Phillips. burial in Keota cemetery. Survived by husband Walter and daughter Mrs. Clifford Conklin.
Washington county in Iowa reached 107 percent of its 1947 saving bond quota with 3.558 million dollars in FE F and G bonds, per U S savings bonds director Roger Warin. Iowa statewide achieved 96 percent of its quota with varied county results such as Cedar 86 and Johnson 105.
Des Moines Feb 19 The Iowa treasury reports a record 12 million dollars in sales taxes collected in the Christmas quarter of 1947. State tax officials say 1947 total receipts reached 42,666,000 dollars and retail business volume hit 2,100,000,000 dollars statewide.

Mrs. Rose Wood of Ainsworth dies Wednesday after a stroke. Funeral Friday at 3 PM at the Ainsworth United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Stahmer. She was born 1877 in Yattan Iowa and married Frank I. Wood in 1894. Survived by two sons and two daughters, three brothers, two sisters, twelve grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Burial in Ainsworth Cemetery.
Lt Gen John R Hodge told Soviet authorities in Seoul that the mishandling of two U S liaison officers in Soviet occupied Korea on February 8 was a gross insult to the U S Army and its representatives. He demanded an immediate investigation and assurances that such rowdyism would not recur in a letter dated February 17 to Lt Gen Borotkov.
Members of the Washington recreational council met at the YMCA and voted to allocate 500 dollars to the softball association and 100 dollars to the Teen-Agers dance program. The softball group will buy lighting equipment for Greenfield, while the teens plan a loudspeaker and other gear. A committee to plan Washington summer playground activities was appointed, with Ar Tomas Brown Mrs E G Humm and Mrs Paul Shearer named.
Des Moines report says Iowa faced a new cold wave after near spring temperatures. Readings fell from near 20 above to Estherville at 8 above by 9 30 am as winds of 30 to 40 mph were forecast to continue into the afternoon and ease tonight.
An accident in Riverside involved a car driven by Milton Birka of River. A truck was also part of the crash, details incomplete.
Iowa’s Jan 1 1948 stock and poultry inventory shows declines across cattle hogs sheep and poultry with beef cattle on feed down 25 percent and overall cattle nine percent lower than 1947. Hogs down seven percent from last January and sheep and lambs on feed down thirty percent. Poultry slightly sinks as turkey counts fall sharply to 171 000 from 300 000 a year ago.
The group of young people joining the evangelistic crusade at the Methodist Church begins Sunday evening. Lawrence Lacour leads the group preaching and marimba with Mildred Lacour as harpist and pianist. Leontine Ostlund and Lois Seashore sing in the trio. Cottage prayer meetings precede the event with listed hosts in seven units.
Mrs. Robert W. Kephart 79 died at her home 11544 West Third Street Desid c at 11 20 this morning after a stroke two and a half years ago. She had been ill since last Sunday and funeral services were held at Sherman funeral home with Rev. T C Polk in charge. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery. Born April 16 1868 in Concord township Louisa County she was daughter of Thomas and Sarah Day Telford. Her mother died early and she was reared by David Mulford in Mercer County Illinois. She moved to Pleasant Hill in 1885 and married Robert W. Kephart November 2 1857.
Charles Ke the Washington Mutual announced a new fire truck is in service to fight fires in rural Washington and assist in town emergencies. The K-6 International chassis carries an 850 lb pump and 435 gallon tank with spray nozzles. crew from the implement company will operate it at Smart Improvement storage. The old truck was sold to Brighton for use there.
Blecha announced that Kenneth J. Blecha of Washington has been named a second lieutenant in the national guard unit at the armory. Lt. Blecha, a World War II veteran, fills the roster for the 113th Cavalry troop under Capt. Charles Snyder.
Mrs. Kephart, longtime Pleasant Hill resident who moved to Washington in 1913, belonged to the Pleasant Hill Christian church. Surviving spouses and relatives include husband, daughter Edna Colwell of Des Moines, son Perry Kephart of Lincoln, Nebraska, granddaughter Verne Chapman of Kansas City, and grandsons Charles Ruebsam of Los Angeles Everett and Donald Kephart in Indiana. Brother Dr. S P Telford is deceased.
The CIO United Packinghouse Workers votes to strike against Armour Swift Cudahy and Wilson plants. They seek a 20 cent hourly wage increase, claim prices won’t rise, and say talks will continue while a strike date is announced later. The 29 cent demand is noted as revised.
Iowa VFW department officers will attend the first district meeting in Fairfield on Tuesday February 24. Local post members plan to send a delegation. Howard Welsh department commander will lead the program with speakers and a free feed and entertainment program.
About two hundred Washington county teachers and guests gathered in the high school auditorium Wednesday for a county wide teachers meeting. R K Eliason of Letts Iowa spoke about his European trip with Farm Bureau members and showed colored slides. Prior to the meeting, county school superintendents held a brief business session and oyster supper hosted by their wives. R S Moyle of the Iowa Education Association discussed new school legislation and welfare proposals from the state education group.
Perth reports the first wheat shipment from Western Australia set for Great Britain. The crop is estimated at 29.5 million bushels, signaling a major export milestone for the state.
