A blast shattered a 14 family apartment house in a Negro housing project in New Orleans injuring at least 80 and trapping about 25. Police suspect gas ignition. rescue teams and priests aided victims as hundreds gathered to watch the debris removal.
Joe Cochran takes possession of the Candy Kitchen in Washington from Al Cantoni who ran it for 43 years. Cochran plans extensive redecorating and a new line of home made candy while continuing the soda fountain and other departments. Cantoni will assist during the transition and Tom Cantoni will focus on farming.
Washington city council moved to condemn the current airport site for a municipal airport to be city owned. An ordinance authorizes a special tax to fund acquisition and equipment, plus $55,000 airport certificates and annual tax levies from 1946 to 1963 to raise $4,245 net each year.
Des Moines Iowa five thousand firms may be approved to train World War II veterans under federal and state programs. More than 1 000 firms already approved and demand remains strong. Veterans receive up to 65 dollars a month if single or 90 dollars if married while employers pay the full wage up to the journeyman level with the government covering the difference. Training requires no college qualification and interstate employers must pay at least the minimum wage.
Wyoming chose its state flag from 57 submitted designs in a public contest. The winning concept was selected by a designated panel and approved for adoption as the official state emblem.
Price chief Chester Bowles testified before the House Banking Committee that Ford Motor Co asked the Office of Price Administration last summer for a 55 percent price increase. Riceville reports Mrs. Earl Marr died from burns after a kerosene can exploded in the kitchen causing clothes to catch fire. her husband helped extinguish flames.
Col Earl G Gebhardt camp dental surgeon reports five per cent of soldiers passing through Camp Grant choose to stay extra days or weeks after discharge to finish dental work before returning to civil life.
Pittsfield Massachusetts Frank A Shepardson served 28 years as water inspector and reports being bitten more than 20 times by vicious dogs during his tenure.
In Chicago on February 19 a sewer behind a garage four blocks from the Degnan home yielded the arms of six year old Suzanne Degnan who was kidnapped and killed on June 7. Detectives captain Walter Storms confirmed the arms match the missing torso, stating the full body is recovered but no new clues exist.
Lee Stacey 49 prominent Brighton farmer died at Washington County Hospital after major surgery on February 11. He was in poor health for some time and had been hospitalized in Washington and Iowa City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Brighton Methodist Church with Rev. BK Kk Voss officiating, burial in Brighton Cemetery. Stacey handled farm work at home until his death. He is survived by his wife Edith Eisley Stacey, two daughters Mrs. Lawrence Hunter and Mrs. George Howard, and one grandson, plus siblings and other relatives.

Five recruits joined the Washington headquarters company of the Iowa State Guard during last night's drill at the armory. The unit seeks more recruits and aims to build to full strength with rifle marksmanship training on the indoor range. A ten-man competition team is to be chosen in the next two to three weeks, followed by a meal at the State cafe.
Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday at eleven o'clock for Thomas A. Boyer who died at his Chicago home. Dr. George Kerr is expected to officiate the ceremony at Elm Grove cemetery.

Dr. Fred L. Minick 52 longtime Washington resident died Sunday in Cedar Rapids. Graveside rites at Elm Grove cemetery follow a 9 a.m. St. Patrick’s Cedar Rapids service with American Legion military rites. He was a World War I veteran and former Cedar Rapids chiropractor. Surviving wife Ida, mother, siblings in Iowa and New York City. Burial expected between 11:50 a.m. and noon.
Relatives report the sudden death of Mrs. Joe Slosser from a heart attack at her California residence. Born in Washington, she and her husband lived in the west for over 40 years and were cousins of the Chilcotes and Weldins. She leaves a husband, three sons, and two daughters. her maiden name was Jennie McGahey.
United Press reports that long distance telephone operators in 47 states leaned toward a nationwide strike but agreed to federal mediation between AT and T and the NFTW. NFTW officials in Memphis cited a survey showing a majority of affiliated unions favor a strike, though no formal action was taken.
Albert J. Loveland state AAA chairman and Janesville farmer says he will not seek the Democratic nomination for governor. Loveland, head of the AAA since 1941, had been mentioned as a possible candidate and was endorsed by Lima county young democrats. The sole declared candidate for governor so far is Gov. Robert D. Blue, who also announced for the June Republican primaries.
