Iowa farmers expanded livestock and poultry holdings to a record 19 million head on January 1 1942 due to the food for freedom program and favorable pork dairy and poultry prices. The rise surpassed the prior year by about 12 percent with hogs and milk cows driving the gain.
Dr William Clayton Power of the University of Chicago told the Iowa Ministers convocation at the University Church of Christ that it is false to culture to exclude religion from education. He noted fewer than half of U S children aged five to seventeen receive systematic religious training across Jewish Catholic and Protestant groups and said there has been renewed interest in providing religious instruction.
Ames resident and former newspaper man Hartzell Spence, back from a six month South America tour, criticizes U S civilians for leaking military secrets while on leave. He is visiting his mother, a sorority housemother at Iowa State College.
Des Moines state tax commission officials said they received a two cent check from an income tax payer.
Iowa City war pits coeds and florists against men students and frat sorority officers. The Heiberg brewery in Waverly has been sold to Bunnin and Sons of Chicago to produce industrial alcohol. Repairs will proceed in the coming months under a plan that has lingered in receivership for over a year. Previously it operated as a beer producer before prohibition and closed in 1930.
Carl W. Danielson field supervisor for the Farm Credit Administration plans to visit the Farm Bureau Office in Washington on Wednesday February 25 from 9 to 3. Farmers needing funds for seed feed tractor fuel or machinery repairs for their 1942 crop should arrange to see him on that date.
Petroleum Coordinator Harold L. Ickes said in Washington that if other methods fail to solve shortages on both coasts the nation may face nationwide rationing of petroleum products. He described himself as pessimistic and urged shared sacrifice to ease disabilities.
The Navy announced 56 Iowans are presumed to be prisoners of war. They include 30 navy and Marine enlistees and 26 civilians stationed at Pacific outposts and Wake Island at the time of the February 7 attack. The list names 16 Navy and Marine personnel and 40 civilians across Iowa towns and cities.
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson warned that sporadic attacks on the coast are likely while the high command pushes an offensive to crush the axis. He urged resisting local pressure for coastal defenses and recalled 1911 calls for Texas border patrol to illustrate limits of troop availability.
OSKALOOSA Dave Williams a 6¢ Beacon coal miner is in critical condition at Mahaska hospital following a mine accident at the Standard Coal Co. mine near here. He sustained multiple fractures of the pelvis hip and both collar bones in the incident.

Reverend George Belknap of Chicago, one of the Zam Zam survivors after the Egyptian steamship Zam Zam was sunk by a submarine, arrives in Washington today to give talks. He speaks in Hayesville this evening, at Wellman Friday, Pilotburg Friday night at eight, and Saturday at the Friends church in Richland. He will stay with Mr and Mrs Jacob De Koning during his visit.
Ames Paul H Wilder a Clarks ville selectee was accidentally cut on his left arm en route to Fort Des Moines on a bus with 16 other youths. Sergt Arnold Evenson of Fort Leonard Wood Mo helped and arranged medical care and continued travel stating the wound was caused while handling a pen knife.
Buyers from Idaho to Pennsylvania attended the Knotek Bros Duroe bred sow sale at the Knotek farm near Riverside. Forty three head sold at an average of 104.70 with Top Row Fancy Ace progrower delivering a $225 price to Lauxmont Farms. Rollie Pemberton bought a fall boar for Idaho University at 95. Seven spring gifts averaged 171.65. total sale over 5000. Red Cross donation sold for 40 to Mr Baird.
World Day of Prayer service to be held tomorrow at 2 30 PM at St Pauls Church. Theme I Am the Way will guide the observance with sub topics by women from Washington churches. All women of the community are invited to participate in this union prayer event.

A chimney fire near the Karl Miksch residence northwest of Ainsworth prompted chemical extinguishers and a Farmers' Mutual Insurance truck to the scene. Though no damage occurred after about twelve hours, creosote residue kept the chimney warm and the odor lingered.

Despite heavy fighting near the Burma road, arrivals in Java and anticipated additional reinforcements aid the allied resistance as Japanese air raids strike Batavia Port Darwin and a Java airport.

The House passed the pension for congressmen provision on December 1 1941. The Civil Service Retirement Act is amended to extend coverage, raise retirement age for two groups, and increase employee contributions from 3% to 5.
