The column notes Kinross has seen little traffic since Christmas with only one train in 20 days. For ten days no Register & Tribune arrived. Bacon can only enter via highway 22, open intermittently, while all other roads into town have been closed for days.
A group of farmers six miles west of Emmetsburg arrived in town frostbitten after a six day trek with four teams and bobsheds. They cut through pasture fences with six pairs of wire cutters and sought chewing tobacco at a local store before starting the long return trip.
DES MOINES a daytime tennis exhibition will feature the Halsworth Vines professional troupe making its first Des Moines appearance of the year. The daytime schedule aims to allow out of town crowds to attend without a late-night trip home, sponsors said.
Emmetsburg farmer Saum Kenkel Vig cares for wildlife by feeding pheasants during cold days. Sam Boies of the local Sloaak Walton league notes Henkelvig feeds 760 pheasants daily on his large Cylinder farm, aiding game protection efforts.

Six Rock Island trainmen thanked Mrs. W. J Hall of Fernald for food and shelter after their Des Moines to Minneapolis food train became snowbound last weekend. Conductor J. L. Sullivan of Des Moines said Mrs Hall supplied meals and beds for part of the men when the town faced tight food supplies and scarce lodging.
Cedar Falls high school debate tournament sponsored by Iowa State Teachers College has been postponed to Friday and Saturday February 21 22 from the original February 13 14 date due to low team entries and travel concerns.
City engineer N B Barber warned Waterloo and Cedar River cities to prepare for inevitable high water as snow and ice melt this spring. About 50 thousand sand bags are available on immediate notice.

The Columbus Odd Fellows temple fire killed five people by noon and injured seven, with three firemen among the dead or missing. Firefighters were trapped by collapsing walls while battling the blaze in the three story downtown building. Rescue teams feared higher tolls as the ruins were searched.
Iowa industries cut employment by six tenths of one percent in January ending a yearlong rise. State Labor Commissioner Frank Wenig reported a 9.9 percent year over year increase since January 1935 and a 15.5 percent rise in weekly payrolls. Reporting industries employed 47,423 people across 13 cities with gains in Ottumwa and Burlington, while total weekly payrolls reached 964,906 dollars.
Heavy snowfall shuts Wellman Iowa schools for the rest of the week. Fire alarm at J M Schwartzendruber home caused minor damage. WPA crews repair a gravel road north of town. coal shipments from Iowa City ease the coal shortage. Republican caucus elects delegates for February 21 county convention.
Bruno Hauptmann and his new counsel Samuel S. Leibowitz met in Trenton penal institution after a long parley. Leibowitz said progress was made while Hauptmann maintained his innocence as his death sentence reprieve neared its Feb. 15 end.

Janitors will install signs at grade schools and St James, with one sign in each direction, during school commute times. The Washington County Poultry Breeders association elected officers last night at city hall with the same slate as 12 months ago. Fred Wagner remains president Harry Ward is vice president Fred Downing secretary treasurer. Board members include Harry Ramseyer Art Pratl Delbert Bailey Mrs Joe Wolfe Harold Hayes and Gerald Duncan. The annual poultry show is set for November 18 21 with plans to hold it on Saturday to benefit the community. A successful year was reported and a drive for new members is planned.
Aimee Semple McPherson of Angelus Temple faces a $400,000 damage suit filed in Los Angeles. Vivian Benton, ex publicity agent for the temple, contends she suffered mental and physical distress from a statement attributed to Mrs McPherson, including hatred and humiliation.

Ernest White and Runt Allen, truck drivers for Washington Beverage Co, suffered slight cuts and bruises when their truck was struck by a Burlington train on East Main street yesterday afternoon. The slow-moving train mitigated the damage and injuries, with the vehicle badly damaged.
A governor appointed commission investigating Illinois penal conditions remained secret amid the Loeb murder fallout and Willam McCabe's grand jury evidence. Guard Homer Talley faced charges over an escape aid while convict John Floss denied a jailbreak claim. Commission members warned against a whitewash and gave no timing or method details.

Cast includes Jimmy the cameraman Milan Thompson Nan Almeda Beenblossom Mac Jimmys assistant John Applegate Colonel Hayden Hughes Dan Grant McKune butler David Fulton Naomi Simpson William Kyle Mary Mickey Helen Applegate Oscar Cuddy Jr chief technician and director Claude Woods. The play, written by Claude Woods and David Fulton, previously aired a year ago.
In Trenton on February 19 Supreme Court Justice Thomas W. Trenchard signed a new death warrant for Bruno Richard Hauptmann. The week of March 30 is designated for the execution following the sickbed signing. Assistant Attorney General Joseph Flanigan announced the action at the State House.
Sixteen men who drive trucks or work under state chauffeur regulations took examinations today at the court house. The tests were supervised by two state vehicle department examiners, R. Warner and Dan E. Kelly. They plan to return to Ingles ton in two weeks from March 4 to examine more candidates.
