Winters garage workers placed a bucket of oil on a fur nace to warm it. The oil ignited but the employees contained the blaze with little damage reported.
The town received its first coal since February 7 when a truck brought it in two weeks after the last Bremer train. A county road through town is open, and residents, facing scarce coal, burned brush fene posts corncobs and corn from private bins and dealers.
Grinnell College student Robert Nichols from Glen Ellyn Ub stripped down to bare feet and raced from the dormitory to the stadium track in subzero weather. He returned with no serious effects reported, spurred by roommates.
The two day music conference planned by Iowa State Teachers college in Cedar Falls has been canceled due to unfavorable weather. The event was scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Iowa City registrar H. C. Dorcas announced second semester registration up by 476 students from last year. A total of 6,849 persons have registered.
Laurel resident Carl Sash fell through the ice of a horse tank in a Marshalltown yard after stepping onto the frozen surface. He became soaked and frozen in his winter clothing before reaching shelter, with snow blanketing the yard.
Birmingham residents faced an outage as a local telephone crew spent three days tracing a line short. They found a small straight pin dropped behind a wall, bridging two wires and cutting the line, blocking emergency calls during a show block.
Professor Grant Wood of the University of Iowa graphic and plastic arts department will be among nine American leaders to receive the honorary Doctor of Letters at the University of Wisconsin June commencement.
Lee Carey, 4%, of Laurel, a famed farmer and former Iowa state husking champion, died after his children rushed by a crew of 20 shovelers to reach the hospital. Carey won the state corn husking title in 1932.
Twenty five young patrolmen in olive drab and black uniforms resumed a week of classroom and field training at Port Des Moines CCC barracks. In six months they applied the lessons to practice and next week another group of twenty five will begin a similar program.
Heavy ice enshrouds the New England coast as the Innomar and Cogstomenis drama unfolds off Plum Island. Nineteen Innomar sailors missing. Cogstomenis crew of 30 at sea 180 miles southeast of Neatucket lightship. Seven vessels race to assist as a large leak threatens sinking the steamer.
The Doston fishing schooner Ingomar landed 19 men after rowing ashore today. Two crew members had already been picked up by coast guard cutters prior to the final arrival.
J M Gallagher of Burlington, assistant supervisor for the first Iowa district, arranged the setup for a county business census in Washington to begin next week. John F Riley will head the census in Washington with Verley Gallagher and John R Kruser in other parts of the county.
Fred A. Stow has led the McLellan store here for five years and leaves today for Kirkesville Missouri to take over as manager there. Mrs Stow and the three children will join about March 15. G A Hagreen succeeds him arriving from Forest Park Missouri where he ran a McLellan store for five years. His wife and two sons plan to move about March 4.
Speaker Byrugg endorses investigation of the Townsend plan funding arc. The House is set to vote on the resolution tomorrow in Washington, D. C.
Thomas J. Flaherty 76 died this morning at five o clock. Body taken to L A Jones funeral home with services planned for Thursday. Born September 10, 1359 in Washington he was a son of Patrick and Mary Gorman Flaherty and lived here all his life. Survived by two nephews Tom Claney Minnesota Dennis Claney Washington and two nieces Mrs Grant Humble and Mrs DeHerman Washington.
An entire family of seven including five children and both parents was burned to death when a fire trapped them as they slept in their home in Sutchinson Kansas.
Snow plow crews battle to keep roads open as arctic air drives temperatures more than 20 degrees below zero. Northeast Iowa may see 30 below with some counties snowbound except for the Lincoln highway remaining clear.
Early today a freight car derailed in the east end of Milwaukee railroad yards. Traffic was briefly tied up but detours over the Rock Island were deemed unnecessary and the track was cleared promptly. The incident was reported by agent Wilder C. Bell.
Wellman Iowa expects train service to resume on the Muscatine Montezuma branch of the Rock Island tomorrow. A snowplow cleared drifts that blocked the line and stopped traffic for nearly two weeks, renewing connections with the outside world.
Gas seepage in underground mains sparked fires and explosions in Utica New York smashing manhole lids up to fifty feet. One person was struck by a rising cover as bills of a six block business district rattled with the blasts.
Representative Lemke of North Dakota accuses Democratic leaders in Congress of blocking a vote on the three billion dollar farm mortgage bill without President Roosevelt's approval. He spoke in Washington on February 18.
William F. Lehhmidt found an inscription inside his violin box stating the instrument is a Jacobus Stainer made in 1637. The unexpected label could affect its perceived origin and value.
Des Moines reports that lack of PWA funds has crippled Iowa state health department sewage plant construction. Seven key projects halted or delayed including in Marshalltown Des Moines Waterloo Ft Dodge and Davenport. Some plants already built under PWA and new additions listed with costs. Health engineer warns of health and fish risks from untreated sewage on Mississippi Missouri river adjacents.
In Salt Lake City a University of Utah home economics class cares for three families of white rats, replacing a longtime fear of rodents with hands on animal study.
Republicans in four Washington wards named delegates and alternates for the county party convention to be held Friday at the court house at eleven. Ward picks include John Squire and others with chairmen J. C. Bauer and George Morrison as secretary in the first ward. Oregon township caucus at Ainsworth reported delegates Jesse Marr and others. No reports yet from other county precincts.
Washington Community Players mark their anniversary by broadcasting the same un-titled episode about a newspaper cameraman, written by Claude Woods David Fulton and Oscar Cuddy Jr. The original cast returns with Iowa City University members joining to reprise roles, airing Thursday on WSU Iowa City. The first telecast was February 18 1936.
OSKALOOSA Feb Firemen battled remaining flames at the home of 81 year old Mrs Jennie Gaston as investigators looked for foul play. Neighbors tried to rescue her but were obstructed by fire. Mrs Gaston lived alone. her brother Ed Stout neighbor helped with food and fuel. Her husband David Garton a Civil War veteran died years ago.
Arthur Ayers 29 died Sunday in Jefferson City Missouri after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at Bidwell's funeral home in Wellman at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Survived by parents Hube and a list of siblings in Iowa and Missouri.
Representative John J. O Connor apologized to the radio priest Father Coughlin after threatening in a House speech to expel him from the Capitol. The House Rules Committee chairman praised O Connor as a good Catholic and noted his constituents share that faith.
The district American Legion convention is announced for this evening with Leon Beatty post in Washington as host to Legionaires from Louisa Johnson and Washington counties. Weather and road conditions may limit attendance though local post members will hold their meeting if visitors are few. state commander W G Henke from Charlies City is expected to attend and address the high school assembly this afternoon.
E. D. Morrison Sr. owns a deed drawn up in 1711, written on sheep-skin and measuring about 24 by 80 inches. The large British era document was handwritten and Morrison purchased it in Los Angeles several years ago.
