Iowa Senate panel urges tax crackdown on nonpaying out-of-state firms
A five member Senate committee questioned Acting Revenue Director Gerald Bair urging a wider probe of out-of-state corporations doing business in Iowa. Sen. Earl Willits cited major distillers and automakers not on Iowa’s 1973 tax payer list and noted Iowa has collected about 750000 dollars from follow up investigations. Bair defended ongoing checks saying 22 of the 100 largest firms have no tax records in Iowa, with 11 of those having some subsidiaries paying taxes. Willits said no final decision on confirming Barr was made.
