Brighton Wins Merger With Washington School District
Voters in the Brighton Independent School District approve a merger with the Washington Community School District by 120 to 7 in a special election with one spoiled ballot. A second merger also passes in Jefferson County, effective July 1, 1965. Students will mostly attend Washington, with Brighton pupils continuing at the Brighton site for junior high and elementary grades.

Mrs Redlinger 85 of Harper Dies at Keota Keokuk Co
Mrs Eiszapeth Mary Redlinger aged 85 died Wednesday at Keokuk County Hospital Sigourney after a short illness. Funeral is set Saturday at p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Keota with burial in Bethel Cemetery. Born January 18 1880 south of Harper she married John Redlinger in 1906 and they farmed near Keota later moving to Harper. Surviving are two sons Raymond and Daryl, daughter Virginia Bomber of Sigourney, and 14 grandchildren.

Famed aviatrix dies in California crash
Famed aviatrix Joan Merriam Smith and writer Trixie Anne Schubert die in a Cessna 180 crash near Wrightwood California. The pair were en route from Long Beach to Wrightwood when the plane wrecked on San Gabriel Mountain at about 6 500 feet, within two miles of the recreation area. The ensuing fire scorched about 11 acres of brush.
