Texarkana Army plant shell explosion kills eleven

An artillery shell 14 inches long exploded on an assembly line at Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant killing 11 workers and injuring at least 14. The blast started a two hour fire and many workers were hit as shells tumbled along the line. Investigators opened a probe as officials reported multiple hospitalizations and a large-scale casualty scene.

Local bank to use computer services in Washington

Washington State Bank launches a computer bookkeeping program linking a local transcriber to Des Moines via closed line. Checks are converted to punched tape and sent to a central computer for nightly reports, with armored return to Washington before the next business day. The system began at Central National Bank and Trust Co. in 1965 and is expanding to banks statewide.

Purdue economist urges local option taxes in Iowa

Des Moines UPI reports Purdue University economist Dr. James Papke urged Iowa lawmakers to consider allowing counties to levy sales and income taxes to curb property tax growth. He advocated returning local revenue to counties, raising state sales and income taxes, and replacing the corporate profits tax with a gross margins tax based on value added.

Armed clashes in Fukien Province reported by Peking Radio

The Beijing radio quoted Han Hsien-Chu in Foochow saying anti Mao elements provoked clashes with the army in Fukien. He described a power struggle across China, with purges in the army and party, and claimed revolutionary victory against opponents.

A vast weather storm lashes the Midwest and East with near hurricane winds, heavy damage, and widespread power outages. Des Moines Fire Destroys Radio Trade Building

A two story radio and television supply building in Des Moines burned Wednesday night, causing about 750000 dollars in damage. The Radio Trade Sales Co. was gutted as flames, fanned by 25 mph winds and near zero temperatures, persisted until early today. Firefighters battled the blaze, with walls collapsing and tubes exploding, while streets around 13th and Grand were barricaded and services shut down.

Seven Separate Battles In Vietnam Run High-Intensity Fighting

U S and South Vietnamese troops fought Viet Cong across at least seven offensives marking the sharpest clashes in months. Reports say 575 Viet Cong were killed Wednesday, 13 U S helicopters were shot down, and Allied casualties were moderate to heavy. The action centered 110 miles southwest of Saigon with major operations in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands.

Senators seek action to dismiss Iowa professor over grades
