Four Arrested in Bomb Plot Targeting Liberty Statues

FBI and New York City police arrested three Black Liberation Front members and a Montreal woman for conspiring to dynamite the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and the Washington Monument. A cache of dynamite and blasting caps was found in the Bronx.

New Buddhist Premier Forms South Vietnam Cabinet

Buddhist physician Phan Huy Quat unveiled a 20 member cabinet to chief of state Phan Khai Sen aiming to unify South Vietnam amid Viet Cong pressure. The lineup includes Buddhists and Catholics to reflect geographical representation as Saigon faces ongoing military crisis. Quat will lead until nationwide elections on March 21 with Phac Khae Sun retained from the Huong regime.

Iowa Heritage Art Exhibit Show Features Washington County Landmarks

The Iowa Heritage Art Exhibit at the State Historical Building Des Moines displays ten sketches of Washington County landmarks and the Yoder sorghum mill near Kalona by Willia J. Wagner. Open through February in the second floor Art Gallery, the exhibit is free and sponsored by the Iowa Society for the Preservation of Historic Landmarks and the Iowa State Department of History and Archives, including six Kleese Homestead structures and other county sites.

Council Bluffs approves $1.25 million school bond

Residents in Council Bluffs Iowa vote 3181 to 1589 to approve a 1.25 million bond aimed at completing the eastside school program begun in 1959. All 15 precincts back the measure with 71.2 percent yes. The plan adds 20 rooms to Jefferson High School and improves Walnut Grove school.

Masons to Conduct Shields Grave Rites

Members of the Masonic lodge will meet at the Washington temple at 1 PM Wednesday to attend the funeral for Henry Shields. The rites will be conducted at the graveside in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Senate approves Iowa school reorganization bill without manana

The Iowa Senate voted 50 to 5 to require all non high school districts to join high school districts by April 1 1966 or file reorganization petitions. Extensions were rejected as several opponents warned against delays while supporters argued reform.

Helen Levis Dies Former Lincoln School Leader

Helen Levis former teacher and principal at Lincoln School died this morning at University Hospital in Iowa City. Jones Funeral Home will handle arrangements with plans indefinite. She taught at Lincoln 1927 1943 and led it 1943 1954 after earlier posts at rural schools near Allerton 1907 1911 and Allerton Public School 1911 1926.

Memorial fund started for local hospital in Washington County

A Washington County Hospital memorial fund is set up to aid the medical staff. Donors may designate gifts through nurses or Juanita Hering at the Washington State Bank, who will serve as treasurer. Family members of the honoree will be notified of gifts received.

Capital for Use in Farming discussion set

A Washington agribusiness evening school panel will discuss capital needs for farms. Representatives from the Production Credit Association the Federal Land Bank a local banker and a local farmer will speak. The panel explores substituting capital for labor and managing capital. Washington city council schedules public hearing on paving project

The Washington City Council set a public hearing for Wednesday March 17 at 1 30 p m in the Legion rooms on street paving and the West Monroe sewer project. City records reveal individual property assessments at the city clerk office. A roughly five percent pay raise was approved for city employees and the police department was authorized to repair the old police car.
