Wapello County DA to seek new trial in Sporer arson case

Wapello County Attorney Sam Erhardt says he will seek a new trial after a jury deadlocked on August 24 hours of deliberation in the arson and conspiracy case against Fred Sporer 41, Democratic chairman, linked to an explosion that destroyed Fred's Auto Supply last summer.

Hughes Won’t Block Massachusetts Presidential Effort

Sen. Harold Hughes of Iowa said he will not block a Massachusetts effort to place his name on the 1972 presidential ballot but will not decide his candidacy until late this year or early next year. He will examine Massachusetts law and may or may not object to a Hughes for President committee there.

Wellman girl dies in rural fire after attempting rescue

Kathy Wagner a 9 year old girl died from smoke inhalation in a Wellman area home fire. Firemen fought to save the house and her mother was hospitalized with minor burns. Officials say faulty wiring caused the blaze that destroyed the home and belongings.

Decimal system comes to Britain

Britain decimalized its currency with Lord Fiske announcing a successful switchover as the pounds shillings and pence era ended at midnight. Clerks reported customers asking for prices in “real money” while Ireland also moved to the new decimal system in a similar shift to dollar and cents style units.

Iowa Justice Robert L. Larson to retire April 1

Iowa Supreme Court Justice Robert L. Larson, 72, announced his retirement effective April 1 after 18 years on the high court and a total 28-year state service career. Governor Ray will name a replacement from a legal nominating committee list. Larson cited desire to let a younger man take on increasing duties.

Fatal car with exhaust leaks claims six lives in Iowa

A 1961 car with a leaky exhaust system killed three Des Moines area youths early Sunday and was linked to an earlier November carbon monoxide deaths of three residents on an Interstate 80 stretch. Four youths were found in the car after a patrolman revived one owner, with two others dead on arrival. Police traced the car through several owners who knew of its repairs needed, as relatives mourn the victims Pamela Sue Barnes Roxanne Harmson and Gregory Fetters and the owner Robert Schnathorst.

Valentine Shooting Accident in Mount Sterling

Mrs Roberta Grace Ludwick 22 was shot in the hip and hospitalized in good condition after her husband Butch Ludwick 25 wounded her while cleaning a .22 caliber revolver. He drove fast to Van Buren County hospital at 10 40 p m and stayed beside her until 2 a m. On the drive home a deer jumped into the road near Iowa 1 two miles north of Mount Sterling causing a crash that damaged the car $400 with no injuries to Ludwick.
