A capacity Washington County Beef Producers Association banquet at the Washington Methodist Church featured Rev Charlies Willey of Moline Illinois as speaker. Don Kauffman Marion Stransky and Arvid Anderson were elected directors. 4-H members Marie Schmidt and David Norman were honored for top livestock awards. Residents discussed beef promotion financing with a strong lean toward a national check-off and varied views on state funding and per head contributions.
Brown University President Keeney declared the chapel bell at Brown University Hall will ring only after a donor contributes one million dollars. The unusual bell policy frames a viral fundraising idea tied to a landmark campus feature.

Harold Slater an 18 year old from Lamont was found in his wrecked car with both hands and feet frozen after his vehicle struck a cement bridge and then veered into a ditch north east of Independence Iowa. He was hospitalized in poor condition with head injuries frozen extremities and leg fractures. A passerby discovered him around 1 a m. Tuesday night.
The Jaycee Trade Show at Washington Armory is postponed due to date conflicts and will run March 13 and 14. Merchants of Washington will display, and top entertainment is planned for each evening.
Dave Livingston Sr. of Washington will address the Christian Tabernacle Thursday at 7 30 p m. He recently returned from a Holy Land trip and will show pictures and recount his journey. The public is invited.
A Bloomfield jury found William G. Karston guilty of first degree murder in the fatal Pulaski farmer slaying during an $81 robbery. The eight women and four men deliberated 19 hours 20 minutes, delivering a life sentence with the judge to formalize immediately.
Cedar Rapids reports Sen. Rourke B. Hickenlooper 59 announces pursuit of the Republican nomination for a third term. A former governor and long-serving senator, he sits on Agriculture and Foreign Relations panels and led the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy. Two Democrats, Spike Evans and Lymund Wilcox, also seek their party’s bid.
Senator George D Aiken said a veto is possible over a natural gas bill tied to a $2500 campaign contribution during debate. A federal grand jury probes the offer while committees review related matters. White House pressure and presidential balance between free enterprise and captive customer protections are cited as context.
In Des Moines five heavily armed youths were arrested after breaking up three large gatherings following a basketball game loss. Officers found two switchblade knives one regular knife a knife pistol and a lead weight tied to a chain in a car with the youths. Police dispersed 20 carloads of teens near East High School about one hour after East lost to Roosevelt 64 40. An earlier raid broke up about 300 people near Roosevelt and 15 carloads at the Iowa State Fairgrounds without incident.
Pope Pius XII, 79, appeals to U S Catholic schoolchildren during Ash Wednesday lent drive to aid poor and suffering children in war shattered homes. The message broadcast from New York marks his first recorded appeal in three years due to health, continuing a 1945 effort.
Premier Bulganin is expected to outline the new five year plan at the 20th Communist Party Congress in Moscow after Khrushchev's keynote. Khrushchev urged peaceful coexistence or war, pledged economic strength and admitted gaps in science and technology while calling for partial disarmament steps.
The Iowa National Guard unit will host an all day open house at Washington Armory on Saturday to recruit and inform about guard benefits. A two hour morning training session precedes the event with displays of equipment and continuous movie screenings. Coffee and donuts will be served. A second open house is set for Monday night February 20 with invitations to local civic groups and the public.
President Eisenhower’s doctors declare no medical reason to bar a second term and say he can serve four to five years or longer in an active White House role. The update boosts Republican hopes and signals a green light for a potential nomination with final decision pending Eisenhower’s own feeling.
Des Moines AP reports the Iowa Crop and Livestock Reporting Service records show cattle and calves at 6,223,000 head, a record, with hogs at 11,602,000, and sheep and lambs at 894,000. Horses and mules decline to 88,000 as total livestock rise 2 percent from last year.
Charles K. Needham died at 6:30 p.m. in a Grinnell hospital after a stroke. A longtime Iowa newspaperman, he owned the Washington County Press from 1906 and published papers in Richland, Sigourney, Montezuma, Grinnell, and Washington. Burial is planned in Oskaloosa, born January 13, 1868.
Mrs. Albert Donovan died this morning at her home 722 East Main Street. A Washington resident for 38 years she was born in the county. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday February 17 at St James Catholic Church with Rev. R J Kinnavey officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove cemetery. The rosary is to be recited at the residence at 8 p.m. Thursday. The body will lie in state after 7 p.m. tonight. Jones Funeral Home handles arrangements. She was born April 9 1873 in Washington County to Paul and Elizabeth Donohue Sampson and married Albert Donovan November 14 1914. Survivors include her husband and one sister Miss Lucy Sampson of Washington.
The 80 year old Aga Khan, head of the Ismaili Muslim sect and among the world’s wealthiest men, was brought to his Riviera home in an ambulance after arriving by plane from Egypt. His physician described him as very tired.
Los Angeles police say furrier Al Teitelbaum of Beverly Hills staged a $280000 fur salon robbery to fund debts and insurance. Beverly Hills Police Chief Clinton H. Anderson charged Teitelbaum and four others with conspiracy to defraud and grand theft as the grand jury revisits the case.
Dillard M. Collins 71 of Wellman died at Brown Rest Home in Wellman Monday. Funeral time changed to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church Wellman with Rev. E. M. Buehler presiding. Burial will be in Harris Cemetery near Harris Missouri. Powell Funeral Home Wellman handling arrangements.
Scoutmaster Wayne Brock announced Boy Scout troop 241 will hold a court of honor on Thursday February 16 at 8 p.m. in the basement of United Presbyterian Church in Washington. Parents and friends are invited. Scout Jim Cook will receive a Star Scout award and merit badges and ranks will be awarded. Patrol offices will be appointed at the ceremony.
Gov. Leo A. Hoegh of Iowa declares he will run in the Republican primary for a second term. In a family conference with his wife and two daughters, he cites progress in education roads farming and industry and argues for continued clean government. He notes a record of highway work tax support for schools and job growth while facing possible opposition from Lt. Gov. Leo Elthon and other candidates.
The Outstanding Young Farmer award by the Washington Jaycees will be presented to the Washington County winner at a dinner February 20. A panel of judges selected this year’s county winner from nominations by individuals and groups. The county winner will attend the state dinner in Oelwein February 26, where the state winner will be named and proceed to the national contest. last year Willard Palmer was both county and state winner.
