Chicago residents received free hamburgers at seven Peter Pan snack shops as a bid to restore faith after a horsemeat scandal. The downtown location saw many seats empty early, with customers initially hesitant before asking for coffee and then hamburgers.
The Defense Production Administration announced extra supplies for civilian goods in Q2. An additional 4.5 million pounds of alumina 500000 pounds of copper and 5 000 tons of steel will be diverted from a DPA reserve and returned stock. This could raise consumer-goods output from the slump to about 80 percent of pre Korean levels.

John Downs announces the purchase of Stanley Foster s truck and equipment and will continue Foster s trucking service from his home at 1126 East Second Street. Foster will devote full time to farming, with Downs previously associated with Foster for five years.
In Panmunjom Korea Saturday the Reds offered a cease fire proposal on the fifth item of the armistice talks backed by orders from Pepin Vyongyang and possibly Moscow. The move could be a turning point if acceptable and set the stage for a full peace conference after an armistice. U N spokesmen said negotiators nearly agreed on prisoner exchange except voluntary repatriation.
Word from Washington reports the death of Lt. Col. Horace E. Pike in El Paso Texas after illness. He served in the adjutant general's office and was previously in Germany. He had recently moved with his wife Mary Louise Harwood to El Paso for health reasons and died during December. Burial plans were undetermined with Waterloo as the expected site.
The local YMCA hosts a quadrangular swimming meet this weekend at 2 pm in the YMCA pool. Swimmers from Muscatine Davenport Moline and Washington will compete and the public is invited to attend.

Charles P. Fox, 83, of 519 South Avenue B died here today at 12 40 p m after an illness of several weeks. The body was taken to Sherman’s funeral home. Arrangements were still in definite this afternoon.
