The Earl of Oxford and Asquith, a leading English statesman and wartime prime minister, died at 6 50 am after pharyngitis left him comatose. He will be buried at Westminster Abbey with a state funeral planned unless otherwise wished.
Secretary of Commerce Hoover will testify before the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee on Friday February 24 to share views on Mississippi flood control. Chairman Jones arranged the date during a phone call while Hoover is on a Florida fishing trip. Hoover may cut his trip if needed, but is advised not to.
Ed Jackson and Rene Warner of the Farmers Shipping Association of Washington report a notable year from February 1927 to February 1928. They shipped 25 056 head of stock totaling 685 897 88 dollars to city markets, with veal calves and other stock making up the load as shipments remain active daily.

Funeral services are planned in Belmond for Mrs. A P McGregor 52 of Des Moines who died after a car skidded and overturned near Belmond yesterday. She suffered a brain concussion while her husband escaped injury. The couple had attended funeral services for Walter C Ramsay the late secretary of state.
The Senate member George Casimir Dessaules is 99 years old while Louis M. Auger, a member of the House of Commons, is 23, highlighting the broad age span in Parliament.
The senate agriculture committee favorably reported the McNary farm relief bill. The measure mirrors the McNary-Nlausen proposal, with some details altered. It retains the equalization fee provision the president objected to last year.
Secretary of Agriculture Jardine will support Herbert Hoover for the Republican nomination. Jardine says Hoover would be a fine president and attentive to farmers. He notes Kansas senator Curtis as a rival favorite son, but has advised Curtis of his Hoover support.
Mrs. Margaret Bailey widow of James Bailey died yesterday at her home on West Main Street at age 81 from apoplexy and old age. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 30 PM at the B L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr W W Bowers with interment in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born in Rochester Indiana September 18 1846 and married in February 1867 in Washington. She leaves one daughter Mrs Ida M Bateman and a son Marsh W Bailey. Four brothers and one deceased sister also survive. She joined the Baptist church as a girl and lived by those principles.
Fourteen Washington county veterinarians are invited to join the Johnson County veterinary association dinner at Hotel Jefferson Town City on Thursday February 16 at 6 30 pm. The meeting aims to share ideas for improved farmer service and livestock health. Dr F J Crowe Iowa City is vice president of the Eastern Iowa Veterinary association. Dr A R Menary Cedar Rapids is president and Dr W J Pirie Springville is secretary of the publicity committee.
D C Stvenson once an Indiana Klan grand dragon presented his version of an alleged conspiracy to bribe former Governor Warren T. McCray. He named Governor Kad Jackson and others as involved in the scheme in Indianapolis.
The Iowa State Highway Commission awarded 104.09 miles of paving for $2,862,864.11. Bremer, Clayton, Davis, Jefferson, Mills, Montgomery, Van Buren and Warren counties benefit. Largest contract went to A F Johnson Construction of Minneapolis for 18.538 miles in Clayton County at $492,650.39. Harrison Engineering and Construction of Kansas City led total awards at $884,255.80 for 17.917 miles in Van Buren and 14.8 miles in Davis. National Construction of Omaha earned two contracts totaling 12.313 miles in Mills. Other awards included Bryant Paving of Waterloo and Anderson Empire of Marshalltown for 8.845 miles in Jefferson and Des Moines Asphalt & Paving for 10.454 miles in Warren.

In Clinton Iowa a one day gathering of mastern Iowa lumbermen favored cutting the corporate tax from 13 1 2 percent to a maximum 5 percent for individuals. The group sent their resolution to Iowa senators in Congress. Henry Mitchell was elected president with A M Franklin as secretary treasurer. A banquet and dance closed the event.
