County seeks equalized tax valuations in adjoining counties

Washington County officials filed petitions in Polk County District Court aiming to force Keokuk and Johnson counties to raise their tax valuations or permit Washington County to cut its valuations by ten percent. The action, tied to ongoing suit against Department of Revenue director William H. Forst, seeks an injunction to halt enforcement of the orders and prevent tax inequities across school district lines. A hearing likely next week, as court actions delay tax figures and payments.

Iowa Senate passes sweeping modernization of bank laws

The Iowa Senate approved a 160 page reform bill 57 to 0, sending it to the House. Senator Andrew Frommelt expanded the State Banking Board from four to six members and defended the measure as making the board more responsive. The vote blocked a bid to delete a five year executive experience requirement for the state banking director, and allowed two riders: governor firing power without Senate approval and court records on banks in shareholder lawsuits.
