Ten Osceola residents are ill with suspected food poisoning from spoiled cream pastries bought at a local shop. Two remain in hospital, others at home. Dr Harken reports all are expected to recover and samples from the cream puffs have been sent to a lab for analysis.
The assault with intent to murder case involving Mrs Helen Brewer was adjourned to February 27 after she again failed to appear. Attorney Carroll Cuiting of Decorah said he did not know her location. Floyd County Sheriff B F Atherton filed the charge, alleging Brewer attacked him with a club after a stray calves warrant was served. A bench warrant was issued by Judge M H Kep ler.
Farmer Dows Fred Peyer, 67, died Tuesday when his car collided with a cattle truck driven by Melvin Peddle, 20, on Highway 72 near here during heavy fog. The truck caught fire. Peyer was en route to an elevator association meeting. Cattle were saved. truck sustained major damage.
The Iowa House approved a bill to create an Iowa Development Commission. It would promote the state as a commercial, industrial and agricultural field of opportunity, seek industrial firms to locate in Iowa, and publicize the state's natural advantages nationwide. The measure passed the House 92 to 5 and moves to the Senate.
Amana society reports 1944 sales reach a new high of three million dollars despite manpower shortages and an Iowa river flood that washed out over 1,009 acres of corn. About 120 Amana residents serve, boosting home front morale. dairy and hog sectors helped offset losses. Four silos, two barns, and a hog barn were built, and 1,440 acres were limed.
Iowa farm income fell by about nine million dollars in November compared with the same month last year. Officials indicate preliminary data reflect reduced crop receipts and rising costs impacting farm earnings statewide.
Price Administrator Chester Bowles outlined a broad program to aid veterans returning from war. The plan includes advisory services in national regional and district offices, veteran relations staff, and revisions to rationing rules to help veterans start new businesses using rationed food products. The program also seeks to recruit veterans for OPA service and maintain contact with veterans organizations while holding down living costs through enforcement campaigns near training camps and rehabilitation centers.
E R Burham of W F W Post plans to assist widows and orphans of World War I veterans in securing pensions. New pension figures project about 75 million dollars for 1945 as the congressionally approved bill covers widows and children, with monthly rates set by family size.
In Omaha Sitter's Auto Parts disposes of government surplus blue materials stored at the Congress hotel basement under his direction. The items are mainly truck and car parts bought in excess and are being sold to dealers and rafflers by Mr Sitler.
A blue four door sedan with 1942 plates was driven away from in front of Mr Stephens residence in Almaworth early morning. He heard it start and depart but could not see the thief. The vehicle bore 1941 interior plates and held about half a tank of gasoline.
Allied Canadian and American forces pushed toward the Rhine as floods hamper the northern drive from the Siegfried line. Crerar and Montgomery reported gains along Kleve road and east of the Rhine, with Patton widening corridors beyond Prum. Air support smashed enemy concentrations and disrupted lines from the Roer to the Rhine.
Under secretary of war Robert T. Patterson warned the House Military Affairs Committee that the end of fighting in Europe is not in sight. He urged authorization of nurse drafting and cited 400,000 American wounded in the war with 15,563 in the week ending January 14, 22,825 the following week, and 16,545 the next week.
The end of the Manila battle appears near as American forces retake Cavite and Nichols Field. The 101st airborne division and others advance along Manila Bay while Japanese forces massacre civilians in residential districts. Allied planes bombard Formosa as Nimitz announces Pacific HQ at Guam.
Fifty petit jurors were selected for the March term of the Washington county district court, including 32 men and 18 women. The term opens Monday March 14 with Judge Frank Beehly presiding. jurors report on March 14 for duty, with light expected workload and possibly one or two trials. The list names jurors by ward and town, including Axel Anderson, Dale Bales, Myrtle Beenbloasom, Effie Box, Joyce Bush, Wallace Caldwell, William Edgar, Isabelle Gerot, Ruth Gray, Dewey Hanley, Nell Humble, John Jarvis, Lula Long, Howard McCleery, Fred May, Wilbur Miller, Christina OBrien, Nona Reeves, Clem Shatia, Mae Smith, Grace Stone, Lola Winegarden, and others.
Rev Karl Newton, a China missionary who spent five years abroad, will speak at the Pilotburg church northwest of Washington Friday at 7 PM. He will show motion pictures from China and answer questions on current conditions there. Arrangements were made by Rev Jacob DeKoning, county Sunday school missionary.

Mr and Mrs Don Youdk receive the Purple Heart from their son Set Willams and Young who is hospitalized in England Sergeant Young known as Bill was wounded December 12 in Germany He has not disclosed the nature of injuries and sent the medal home for safekeeping
