A coal dealer in Iowa faced fuel shortages and instead supplied the only tree on his property. He and his worker felled and split the wood to heat two distressed families, providing needed fuel when coal was unavailable.
A motorist assisted a bogged horse after it fell from a bridge and became fully buried in deep snow. Police brought a tow wagon to assist in draining and extract the animal from the snowbank.
A Rock Island freight train stalled near Hurley left a carload of 115 hogs frozen in snow. Ninety men and two additional engines pulled the freight out of the snowdrift after four days of effort at the Decker plant in Mason City.
The two miles of county road west of La Porte City will provide feed for 6,000 sheep and 240 cattle at Rath Packing plant. Despite matching difficulties, feed is being secured and no shortage is imminent.
Motors Car funds a six week program to protect birds threatened by severe winter. The conservation commission mobilized 46 thousand cages and officers to shelter birds, delivering over 86 000 rounds of bird food. Additional feed came from elevators, meat plants, and departments.
Three Charles City men riding in a car encounter a fast moving auto in a one way lane between Colo and Iowa Falls. The other car braked surged over a snow drift and reportedly bounced back onto the highway on its four wheels. All four wheels touched down and the driver of the leaping car was uninjured though stunned. Robert Autmost offered to bet he could not repeat the feat.
Iowa relief experiment provides free legal counsel for relief families. Allan Houghton county director called the trial a success after a 70 day period. Lynne Fowler attorney was employed as counsel and said relief events deserve legal aid equal to medical aid and food.
R. E. Brown of Washington announces his candidacy for county supervisor for 1937. He seeks the Republican nomination in June primaries after six years on the board, including a period as chairman. He lost the last election by ten votes to Boyd Foster and emphasizes his long service and familiarity with office duties.
Funeral services for H F Hesseltine were held at 1 30 yesterday afternoon at Sherman s funeral home. Rev Mr Carstensen of the Baptist church conducted the service with music by Mr and Mrs Clare Nicholson. Pallbearers were six grandsons including Victor Ervine Samuel Guy Hesseltine and Dan Homer Moriarty.
Ottumwa mayor Edwin C. Manning 52 announces his bid for the Republican US Senate nomination in the June primary challenging incumbent Lester J. Dickinson. Manning, a four term mayor and former county treasurer, cites a desire for new faces and declines to elaborate on his platform. Des Moines politics figure George Chaney also enters the Dickinson opposition.
National Commander Oleg Nelson predicts the Washington D C Grand Army of the Republic encampment the week of September 20 will be the largest in years. He says veterans will marching if necessary to attend, despite aging ranks and deaths, and pressure for more funding from Roosevelt administration and Congress.
Des Moines Feb 14 Miners in several Iowa coal mines plan to work not only Saturday but also Sunday to relieve the congestion Governor Herring said today. Four more towns were reported without fed today. They are Thor St Ansgar Forest City and Palmer.
Mrs. J. T. Chadwick shares an anecdote linking her family to Abraham Lincoln. Her grandmother, Nancy Hanks, was Lincoln's mother, making Mrs. Chadwick a distant relation through a first cousin once removed. The note highlights a proud family connection in Washington County.
The Magic Beanstalk, a three act operetta at Washington Junior High, drew a capacity crowd. Juliana the cow delighted the audience with tap and antics as Juse and Lestey Hamill portrayed Juliana. Richard Owen Hero led as Jack with Milo Steele as Blunderbuss the Ogre.

Richland freight crews carted 70 sheep and over 20 hogs from John Rittenhouse farm to Ottumwa. A Richardson double deck truck waited at Elmer Horning corner as small trucks made three trips after a snowplow and Mr Dravens tractor cleared a trail. Rittenhouse accompanied the shipment.
Dr Honsinger of Wellman travels through the Grand View neighborhood amid heavy snow. He makes calls using snow shoes for most of the distance, with one trip by car a few miles and the rest by tractor.
Walter Wilson of Laton cares for a flock of 16 quail kept in a corner of his field. The birds have stayed through the winter and are described as friendly.
Helped mail man Dale Jones of Welton carries part of the mail for Prody Borkoski from Sandy Hook to Wellston. He makes the route partly by sedan and partly on foot, delivering along the way.
Mrs Delber Maxwell of Grandview District says she and neighbors value the Washington Evening Journal noting three mail boxes in their area receive a Journal daily with each delivery.
A morning call from Eugenia Smith, a senior at the University of Iowa, said she had mumps and was not welcome in the dormitory. She chose to stay elsewhere rather than go to the isolation hospital.
In Belleville Illinois two people have died and 42 fallen ill from ruminating gas containing monoxide seeping into homes. Officials say the situation is under control but fear a potential explosion as natural gas leaks worsen due to severe cold and ground freezing. Authorities investigate leaks from damaged gas lines and joints in the supply pipes.
Knights of Columbus lodge plans a Fun Frolic February 24 in the hall with carnival attractions a free dance and music by Kolege Klub orchestra. Prizes 25 at 10 p m no admission. Paul R Horak chairs the committee assisted by Ed Muck J M Kelly J M Welt Joe Wehr manages bingo and Gerald Welt handles stands.
Burt Iowa February 14 Harvey Crouch of Algona was killed when he was crushed between two snow plows on the job.
Washington pastors vote to hold a single union evening service at United Presbyterian church 7 30 p m to conserve coal. Dr B F Schwartz of the Methodist church will preach with Miss Carolyn Hamilton in charge of music. Public aid for the A M E church pledge drive noted.
Iowa sealers ordered to complete first inspection of more than seven million dollars worth of sealed corn by March 1. H. C. Aaberg cautioned that corn not grading No 8 or better by next June cannot be used to satisfy loans.
Mrs John Mapel, 62, died at her Brighton home at 9 30 am after three years of declining health. The Mapel family moved from Lexington a year ago. Survived by husband two daughters Hazel Bell Lovella Bell and Emma Hardin plus a daughter Erna at home one son John Jr and eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were indeterminate with burial likely in Kalona.
Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed called the current cod wave the longest in over a century. He noted a 21 day span from January 21 to February 11 with an average of 1.9 degrees below zero. Reed compared it with historic cold of the forties, fifties, and sixties, saying no earlier period matches today’s extreme cold.
