Bettendorf and East Davenport residents heard sharp explosions as the Rock Island arsenal resumed 155 millimeter howitzer proof firing on the island's eastern end. The practice had been halted for some time.
Webster City John Jack Johnson a 49 year old carpenter was indicted by the Hamilton County grand jury on counts of assault with intent to murder and carrying a concealed weapon. Sheriff E R Lear arrested him December 26 after he allegedly forced his way into the farm home of William Rethman and pulled a gun when asked to help free his car from a ditch.
In Des Moines the budget for feeding National Guard troops shows a family of four would face $85.28 weekly if the 1st battalion of the 168th Infantry is mobilized. Mess officers must spend $1.26 daily per officer called to active duty, shaping official food purchasing limits.
DES MOINES reports that rising steel and essential war material needs for munitions, tanks, planes and ships threaten farmers as the forgotten man. The national defense program elevates material priorities, with moves said to aim at preventing diversion of resources to the war machine that could cripple agriculture.
Herman Peters 21, a farm youth, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Anamosa reformatory for the $240 hold up of the Aetna Savings Bank at McIntire. Judge Tom Boynton imposed the sentence after Peters pled guilty to the crime occurring at 2 15 P M Monday. He was sent to Anamosa immediately to begin serving the term.
Hugh Valleau Fitzpatrick of Chicago died February 12 at 11 p.m. at Edward Sanitarium Naperville Illinois after fourteen months as a patient. Born December 27 1920 in Chicago he was the son of Clara Valleau Fitzpatrick and William John Fitzpatrick. A Hyde Park High School graduate and first year student at Wabash College he will be buried Saturday in Ottawa Ontario where his grandparents resided.
Ames Iowa February 13 Development of a broader market outlet for livestock products is urgently needed to balance our agricultural economy. Thomas E Wilson meat packing executive told Farm and Home Week at Iowa State College that enlarging domestic demand offers the greatest hope as export markets shrink due to the war. He noted farmers rely more on livestock, with foreign markets lost forcing shifts from export crops to feed for livestock. Over 8.5 percent of the meat industry funds a $2,000,000 nationwide educational program by the American Meat Institute. Norman Draper reported the initiative promotes thrifty cuts to encourage more meat on tables. Governor George Wilson warned against treating agriculture as just another trade, praising democratic ideals at State College. One hundred fifty Iowa legislators and guests toured the campus during Farm and Home Week.
Members of the Washington County Sheep and Wool Growers association elected Charles Marek as president for the year, Mark Campbell Jr as vice president, and Glen Dunbar as secretary and treasurer during the annual meeting at the Farm Bureau office. Directors include Robert Campbell and 14 others. The group reported 2,542 sheep and lambs dipped and 700 lambs marketed, with a $5,000 volume of business and 54 members as the organization enters its fourth year.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the administration British aid measure by 15 to 8 and sent it to the Senate floor for debate expected to begin Monday. A later committee vote defeated an amendment stating no US armed forces would be sent outside the Western Hemisphere. Senator Josh Lee warned England stands as a barrier to Hitler and defended lending 1.3 billion dollars in armaments to foreign powers.
A five man sub committee was named today to draft a liquor bill after divergent views on local option were expressed at a public hearing of the house liquor committee. The sub committee was appointed by committee chairman Frank K E Sharp of Elkador. A bill calling for revocation of tavern licenses was introduced in the lower chamber. The measure would impose a one thousand dollar fine or one year imprisonment on the violator and a 500 dollar fine on building owners.
G Bohstedt of the University of Wisconsin told farmers at a dairymen session that prussic acid danger is overstated. In hundreds of tests Sudan grass 18 inches high or taller was never found to be poisonous. Breeding experiments underway aim to make the pasture crop safe in the future.
A district meeting of soil conservation committee members from ten southeastern Iowa counties will be held in Washington next Tuesday February 18. About sixty people are expected, including county leaders from the women’s department, who will be addressed by Mrs. Sarah E. Richardson.
Fire crews respond to Farmers Cooperative Exchange on North Iowa Avenue when a phone cleaning cloth overheated and ignited in a rear room. No further damage or flames were reported, and the building sustained no damage.
County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill announces the Washington county public school spelling contest will be held Saturday at the courthouse starting at two. Primary grades compete in the G A R room and upper grades in the courtroom with an oral format only. The winner advances to the Des Moines state contest.
M L Hutton director of the state conservation commission was reported near death after an automobile accident near Des Moines. The injury occurred about a week ago and updates showed his condition dire.
Harry N. Schooler and C. D. Walker of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration will address four farmer mass meetings in Iowa in February. Sessions span Atlantic, Storm Lake, Oelwein, and Sigourney with county chairmen presiding. Walker brings cotton expertise. Schooler is a native Iowan and AAA regional director.
About eighty educators from six southeastern Iowa counties plus the Washington County Schoolmasters club attended a Lincoln school dinner. Representative B S Moyle, chairman of the house schools committee, spoke on potential state support, raised teacher standards, welfare, and district reorganization. Supt Harold Ross chaired.
