Dr. W. H. Thompson of Omaha University told the Shelby County Teachers Institute in Harlan that society now values the love of children as the key trait of a successful teacher. The remark marked a shift in attitudes toward teaching methods and demeanor.
Estherville reports O M Hockett a 64 year old farmer died from heart disease while driving a wagon with his son toward home near Fort Defiance state park. He fell after suffering the attack. Survived by wife three sons and one daughter.
DES MOINES. Several Iowans will take part in the third annual North American Wildlife conference in Baltimore next week. Participants include Logan J. Bennett of the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit and Geo. O. Hendrickson of Iowa State College.
Deputy Sheriff H. O. Robinson of Marshall County announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for sheriff. He rejoined the party on February 2 after two years as a Democrat. Robinson Wicklund, the incumbent, is not seeking re election.
Audubon report says Mrs D Bartelson of Fiscus once planned to meet her husband in Harlan in 1919. She waited 19 years before he received her letter, finding no reunion when he finally read the note last Thursday after a Garden visit.
Iowa City ad shows Delos LeDeens announcing he seeks work while blaming his wife for the effort. He describes himself as lazy and incompetent with poor appearance and desires a seven hour day with lunch break. Salary requested is 25 dollars a week due to inexperience.
C. I. Miles told the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce that the local Business group will fight back against accusations of mismanaging national economic forces. Miles, manager of the United Chamber of Commerce north central division, said the organization agreed to support the effort to counter the charges.
MARSHALTOWN members of the third district association of lawn retail druggists vow not to offer filthy magazines for sale. A resolution supports a statewide movement to bar sex magazines from drug store counters.
Marilyn Hood, 10, daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Hood, died at Irving school from a blood clot lodged at the rear of the brain. Union County coroner Dr A Beatty announced the fatal condition, noting such brain clots are rare in children though common in adults.
West Liberty selects the week of June 26 for a centennial event with reunions daily. A parade free meal and attractions are planned with Robert Brooke as chairman and Dr. L A Royal among organizers.

Sheriff H M Putnam was alerted that the car stolen from Dr A W Clow in Washington Tuesday had been found in Waterloo. The car was left in a dead end street, locked, keys missing, and driven to a car lot. Two suspects Thompson and Graham were reported in the area but not confirmed.

Robert L. Jones a Des Moines weekly editor and author of commerce titles announced his run for a 1988 Democratic nomination for state commerce commissioner. He was born in Des Moines county Iowa and is an Episcopal Church member. He plans a leave of absence from his current job to campaign.
Police traced two men linked to the Kraft Clothing Co theft in Osceola three days after a double wedding in Lancaster Missouri. The suspects, seen in Fort Madison, fled as wives were taken to jail in Osceola on 4000 bonds for robbery with aggravation. A string of five stolen cars helped pursue them to Washington, then a Davenport drug store was robbed and the clerk identified the pair.
Japan flatly rejected demands from Great Britain the United States and France for disclosure of naval building plans in notes. Tokyo said it can only expand its navy because of British and American programs and called the treaty limits fair and inequitable.
Vic Crone announces Crone's Market and Grocery will move within weeks to the Bailey room on the square, vacated by Dorothy Schmoeller's ice cream shop. Schmoeller, moving to Clinton after lease ends March 1, sold her shop and the Crone stock will be moved after remodeling of the new site.
Edith Whitacre Johnson, 66, formerly of the Brighton area, died at her home after a long battle with high blood pressure. She was married in 1907 to Charles R. Johnson and is survived by her husband, two brothers, a sister, and a sister-in-law. Funeral arrangements are pending with Sherman's funeral home.
Death reported in Chicago hospital of August Schmidt formerly of Keota. He was a son of Nick and Mrs. Schmidt of Titus community. Body to be moved to Fairfield Mark Hoskins funeral home for burial in Keota.

Siloah Farmer living north of the Indian Creek bridge was attacked while checking livestock Thursday evening. He fought the bull with a pitch fork, grabbed its neck, and escaped over a fence as his dog and wife’s barking drew the animal away. He suffered bruises but no serious injuries.
Chinese airplanes reportedly bombed a Catholic mission near Tangpu wounding priests and dropped explosives on a bridge over the Hwali river. Japanese sources say six planes carried out the raid and Italian officials may protest to China. A British power mill and a French mission facility were also damaged.
Nine new automobiles were licensed in Washington county in the past week. The county treasurer reported total 1938 license tags now 4 172, down 129 from last year’s 4 201. Licensed trucks number 531, up from 510 a year ago.
Des Moines Feb 19. P Case Atlantic Iowa editor withdrew his name from consideration for the Republican nomination for governor. He says he is not a candidate for governor or any office, leaving George Wilson as the only announced candidate thus far.
Mount Vernon announces the death of S. Hahn its oldest resident and Civil War veteran. He commanded the T. Z. Cook post of the Grand Army of the Republic Cedar Rapids. Hahn enlisted in the Army of the Potomac in 1861 at 19 and fought in 11 battles. He was captured at Gettysburg and imprisoned for 14 months at Andersonville and eight months at Belle Island, released emaciated in 1865.
Reports from Hankow state that resistance to the Japanese invasion continues as province leaders in Szechuan issue an ultimatum. The area, described as far western with a population of about 85 million, faces mounting military and political pressure.
In Washington and Iowa alike Republicans mark Lincoln's birth anniversary with dinners and campaigns. Some 15 000 to 20 600 party members gathered across numerous counties to open the 1938 campaign while banquets featured varied menus from Glenwood to Sigourney as Republicans rally nationwide.
