Chicago February 12 A federal government crackdown on illicit liquor rings begins with indictments against 31 firms and 156 individuals. Prohibition Commissioner James A Doran declined to confirm details while en route to Washington as United Press informant hints at further wholesale indictments this week.
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York led Anglican protests against anti religious measures in Russia. A joint motion in the House of Convocation condemned persecutions and called prayers in England on March 16, aligning with Pope Pius XII who asked for a day of penance on March 19 in St Peters.

Nineteen persons were injured when an incoming Chicago and Northwestern suburban train from Aurora was struck by an empty backing train at Lake and Clinton streets near the station. Eleven are seriously hurt as the rear coach struck the second car of the nine car Commuters’ special, derailing and wrecking cars. Traffic halted for over an hour and trains were rerouted. Officials seek causes including an open switch or block signal error.

Voters in Clayton county approved 690000 in county primary road bonds to pave Highway 13 from Elkader to US 18 and Highway 55 from Guttenberg to Highway 128. The second vote, prompted by a publication error, yielded a 1138 vote majority versus 367 in the first ballot.
Memphis police report Will Moore, held on vagrancy charges, briefly evaded officers after passing Capt. Joe Cole in the hall and replied he was getting out. Cole ordered Moore to be rearrested a few minutes later following the escape.

Lincoln City Indiana marks the 121st anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth with no ceremony. The town, population 150, lies near Gentryville named for the Gentry family who were neighbors of the Lincolns from 1816 to 1829 before they moved to Illinois.
In Petersburg Illinois on February 12 a tribute to Abraham Lincoln will feature Frank Sheets state highway engineer as the principal speaker. He will recall Lincoln's days running a general store in New Salem and reflect on Lincoln's legacy.
In Port au Prince on Feb 12 a crowd of Haitians demonstrated after a mass for natives killed at Aux Cayes in December. Police broke up the protest and 31 arrests were made. Pierreaul, head of the Haitian Labor Party, said peaceful citizens and women were maltreated by American officers during the manifestation. He claimed 52 peasants were massacred last December, though best estimates put the death toll around 20.

Funeral services for Carrie Mabel Gruver Gilder announced for Thursday at 10 a.m. at L A Jones funeral home with Rev A A Vinz of the Baptist church to officiate. Burial will be in West Chester cemetery. She died yesterday at 6 15 p m at Washington county hospital from uremic poisoning after illness began last Friday. She was born September 15 1886 in Winfield daughter of Irvin and Estelle Adams Gruver. She married W E Gilder February 22 1907 and they moved to West Chester where he ran a barber shop for eighteen years.
