United States officials unveil two more indictments in a broad drive against alcohol law violations. Hibinger and J W Hibinger companies of Keokuk Iowa named among those charged for dealing in cane sugar and unlawful alcohol distribution as prosecutors prepare a Chicago trial against 31 firms and 157 individuals.
A Washington county couple will wed in a public ceremony on Graham Street February 27, honored by the Washington firemen and about fifty local firms. The couple will receive fifty or more gifts including two $25 cash prizes. Applications open today with winner announced February 24.
A survey finds about half of all sales at a roadside stand occur on Sundays. The result highlights weekend customer demand patterns for informal vendors.
Thomas A. Edison, marking his 88th birthday at his Florida winter home, will take a half day from his labors. He plans a brief newspaper interview and a tablet dedication in the city park, then quick visits with friends. His main pursuit remains a new source of rubber from the golden rod weed.
The first Drama Week program in Washington features a broad cooperative effort by the Fortnight City club drama department grade schools high school and junior college. Mrs. D H McLaughlin welcomed guests and outlined aims as Miss Jane Stewart pianist and Miss Helen Wilson will speak on the Passion Play at Ogerammeragan. The program includes Liszt Rhapsodie Hongroise sung and read by Mrs Hull plus the traveling play The Traveling Man by Lady Gregory directed by Miss Boneta Sarby set for Wednesday in the Y Community Room.
The Federal Farm Board approved formation of a 10 million dollar grain stabilization corporation to buy surplus wheat from cooperatives and stabilize the market. An initial 10 million dollar appropriation from a 150 million revolving fund was set, with future loans planned to gain control of surplus wheat. Delaware charter granted to act as a marketing agency under the Agricultural Marketing Act with no capital stock.
Wayland defeats Wyman 26 to 18 on the Y M C A court as two sharpshooters Stuart and Shantz carry the offense. Bruhn leads Wyman with six baskets while Kalona protests the Montgomery Ward win, with league managers set to meet next Monday.
Feb 11 Howard J. Clark announced he will not seek the Republican nomination for the United States Senate in Des Moines Iowa. He ends speculation of a three way race with Governor Hamill and L. J. Dickinson as potential contenders.
President Hoover lands a six foot sail fish off Long Key Florida during the first fishing trip of his party. Associate Justice Stone and Dr Joel Boone failed to reel in the big one while Boone did haul in two fifty pound amber jacks. The group fished in the warm gulf stream waters eight miles off the island as the couple marked their first wedding anniversary.
A joint rally by two Scout troops at the Methodist church drew a large crowd of scouts parents and citizens. The program featured exhibits from the boys work on display at J C Penney windows plus a flapjack banquet at the Y M C A and a basketball game between the troops.
North German Lloyd steamer Muenchen burned after blasts ripped the shellac hold while dockside in the North River. One fireman killed, five injured, three missing, ship sank after lines were cut. Damage estimated from 2.5 to 8 million dollars, cargo largely shellac nitrate and lime.
Washington business men selling nationally advertised goods may learn to monetize such articles at a Feb 7 7:30 PM meeting at the 96 A. A. where Tenney of the Devine Tenney firm will speak. The session aims to offer practical suggestions. neither the Journal nor Tenney sells at the event.
A Brockton Massachusetts city home for the elderly burned early today killing three aged inmates Uella Bacon George Brown and Minot Copeland. About 80 residents were housed there and twenty were hospitalized with serious injuries. Firefighters and police searched the ruins as investigators estimated the loss at around 100000.
Two apparently young men robbed the Jugenheimer gas station west of town on primary road No 2 yesterday around 8 30 pm. They took two to three dollars, filled the car with gas, and stole candy bars. The unmasked duo fled toward town in a muddy Buick or Dodge. Sheriff Fred Sweet noted the serial number 14352 of the car. Police and county officers searched nearby towns with no word by noon. Frances Jugenheimer alerted authorities and described the suspects as well dressed, one in a brown overcoat and one in a light coat, one wearing four buckle rubber overshoes. This marked the station’s second hold-up in months.
Mrs W J Southwell died yesterday in Edinburg Texas after an operation last Thursday. Funeral services were to be held today. The Southwells had lived in Washington about fifteen years ago and had many friends in the community who would be grieved by the loss.
In Washington on February 11, Senate leaders agreed to take up the Hughes nomination for chief justice at 4 p.m. amid growing Republican opposition led by Borah and Brookhart. About 12 senators were poised to oppose, with debate extending, and a possible postponement to tomorrow for independents to speak. Democratic support varied, Carter Glass opposing over the Shreveport case. The tariff bill dominated other business as the chamber prepared for votes and further consideration.
A large modern twelve room house on the Abram Pearson homestead seven miles northeast of town in the Living Lake area was destroyed by a fire Monday evening. Nate and Grant Pearson and their sister Myrtle own the place. most lower floor contents and basement were saved, clothing and bedroom furniture burned. Insurance covered part of the loss. rebuilding will begin promptly.
Mrs. Southwell, wife of Mr. Southwell, dies leaving a husband and son William. The couple, connected with the George H aul land company during their stay here, had visited Washington last summer and renewed ties with friends. Mrs. Southwell was active in the local Methodist church. Des Moines now lists Mr. Southwell and his brother C. W. Southwell among relatives.
