Lena Stewart announced her Republican candidacy for county recorder and will enter the June primaries. A native Washingtonian, she is a 1925 Washington High graduate who studied at Parsons and Cedar Rapids colleges, held clerical roles at Dexter Washing Machine, Iowa Southern Utilities, and has served as deputy recorder since 1957.
District Chairman Robert Day announced the annual Appreciation Dinner for all Scouts and families. Troop 32 and 60 families to bring meat loaf for 40 servings, Troop 34 salad for 15, Troop 36 Wellman Cubs and Ainsworth group cake, Troop 27 escaloped potatoes for 20, Troop 38 vegetable dish for 20. District will furnish milk, butter, rolls, and coffee.
Brighton voters set a March 13 ballot on a 49000 bond issue to construct and equip a new gym and auditorium and to buy land. The bond passes if 60 percent approved, with voting at Carroll Hall from noon to 7 pm alongside school board elections.
A farewell party for Rev. V. L. Currier the Baptist church pastor will be held Sunday evening at 7 30 o clock at the church. Rev Currier has resigned and will leave soon for Arizona.
Each family must bring their own table service and napkins. Families serving food should bring two serving spoons.
Mayor Larry Cochran and councilmen sworn in as Boy Scout troops seize City Hall in a formal ceremony. The event included oath taking, appointive posts, and a radio tape to air next week as Scouts sign two civic Purpose documents for display and district records.
Fred Bourgeois of Washington announces to seek renomination on the Republican ticket for county auditor. A Kalona native, he ran a Kalona grocery, served as postmaster, and has worked in the auditor’s office since February 1941, holding the post since 1946.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Jones funeral home for Mrs A C Durst. Dr Fred Miller conducted the service. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery with casketbearers Sam Turkington Willard DeLashmutt Sr T A Flenner Paul Shearer Roy Carter Cloid Willits.
District Judge J. G. Patterson sustained two motions in the Townsley land case. Neill Trotman contends the will terms directing 9 acres to the city of Washington for religious or educational use are not honored. The land west of the Armory was deeded to Oral J Brown for National Guard use. case dismissed with appeal likely to Iowa Supreme Court.
The Iowa Bar Association reportedly refused to recommend on Switzer's federal judgeship for Iowa. Senate committee chair Pat McCarran withheld a confidential statement, while Des Moines lawyer William F. Riley recused himself. Gillette, Bourke and Hickenlooper opposed the nomination. Hearings on Switzer's appointment are pending.
J C Holbert's reserve champion bull led the futurity division at the state show and sale of the Iowa Aberdeen Angus Association held Monday and Tuesday at the Cedar Rapids fairgrounds. The event drew 2000 attendees from 11 states. 135 head sold totaling $90,594 with Clarence Hillman of Conover SD bidding $1500 on the reserve champion.

J Trevor Davies of Des Moines son of Mrs. Griffith Davies has been elected assistant secretary at Barkers Life Company. He studied at the University of Iowa and the University of London before earning a master’s from Iowa. He served in the Army Air Corps and has risen in Bankers Life’s actuarial and investment sections. He is married with two daughters and is a Mason.
The 65 people summoned for the district court petit jury will report February 18 instead of February 6. The change shifts the start of juror service for the March term.
The United States seized eight Chinese liberty ships and one victory ship in Japanese ports on orders of a new admiralty court. The move follows high level talks between the U S military and Gen. Douglas MacArthur, with observers viewing it as a signal against Chinese Communists vying for vessels.
Nancy Freshwaters Harriett Amsberry and Barbara Holmes of Keota assisted at a Rainbow bake sale in Washington. Edward Squire of Washington declares candidacy for the county board of supervisors in the June primaries for a term starting 1952. A Washington native and longtime public servant, he has worked as hospital and YMCA custodian, nursing staff, and is active in the American Legion and Masons. His son Everett is an industrial salesman with Crane Manufacturing in Davenport.
Air base officials consider a coal lift to ship Canadian fuel to U S bases as stocks drop to a 14 day supply. Railroads cut passenger service by half and freight by a quarter, with 40,000 plus affecteds including 33,000 railroad workers.
Federal Judge Richmond B. Keech signed a 10 day restraining order ordering John L. Lewis to end the coal strike and start 400000 miners back to work. A hearing on an 80 day injunction under the Taft Hartley Act is set for February 20.
Rex Strait from Larchwood Iowa and Barbara Etter from Mount Vernon Iowa have joined Elder and Shannon in Washington. Strait, now a classified advertising manager, recently spent about a month at the Journal. Etter, a Cornell graduate, holds a BA and studied at Iowa in graduate school and now serves as field advertising representative.
