Iowa City readers will note the St Louis Symphony Orchestra closes the University of Iowa 1936 37 concert series with a Feb 19 matinee and evening program in the Iowa Union. This marks the orchestra’s third straight appearance at the university.
Mrs. Watson displays a fancy quilt at Lincoln's Birthday event in Humboldt. The piece, sewn by her grandmother, features red and white fabric and recalls decorations from Oskaloosa during Abraham Lincoln's presidential candidacy.
Frank C. Gothier of Anthon was elected president of the Mink Breeders Association of the United States at a Chicago meeting. The group formed to stabilize the mink pelt market amid trade concerns.
ESTHERVILLE Emmet County Bar association protested adding new members to the United States Supreme Court saying the action would deprive the court of independence and place it under political influence.
DES MOINES Polk County supervisors report no inquiries from farmers for county feed loans under the Iowa legislature bill. Supervisor Vane B. Overtuff notes lack of applications from Polk County farmers.
Polk County farmers are not seeking feed loans as Creston appoints city officials. The next administration will serve for the rest of Saturday with Raymond Beecher as mayor, Robert Munson as chief of police, and Billy Herring as fire chief.
President Gilmore grants Prof EF Mabie a leave of absence for the remainder of the semester to conduct research in about 30 university theaters funded by a Rockefeller Foundation grant. He will depart this month from the University of Iowa.
Cedar Rapids report shows C V Shepherd stopped for speeding with Police Judge Thomas F B Powell in the rear seat. Powell had already entered a guilty plea for Shepherd upon arrival at police headquarters.

Three highway deaths in Iowa were attributed to crashes between autos and trains raising the 1937 highway fatality count to 43. Otto Glee and Sam Black, both 30 and 25 respectively of Salix, died at a Salix crossing as a northwestern train, about 60 mph, struck their car. Henry C. Mullins, 54, of Albert City, died after his car was hit by a train near Marathon while at Sioux Rapids hospital.
Forrest Shaffer aged 14 died after being accidentally shot by a schoolmate during a staged detective story in Davenport. The boy, son of Major F. Shaffer of the Rock Island Arsenal, was wounded in the abdomen. the companion believed the gun was unloaded.

Henry Palmbeck, 27, a farm hand, committed suicide at Clinton today by shooting himself with a shotgun. The incident was reported by INS.
Ray Albion King of Cornell College and Paul C. Packer of the State University of Iowa addressed Washington school leaders yesterday. King gave multiple talks for high and junior high students on subjects including The Boy's Religion and The Psychology of Drunkenness. Packer spoke at a six o’clock meeting on What to Teach.

Mrs. Keith Sweet, 31, a nurse by training and wife of Keith Sweet, died at her Washington home after a ten day illness. Funeral services are set for St. James Catholic church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Surviving are her husband, daughter Janet aged five, her parents Mr and Mrs Ed Kelly, four brothers and a sister.

Detroit February 11 1941 General Motors and the United Automobile Workers union signed a peace pact ending a costly strike. GM announced a five cent per hour wage increase raising the payroll by about 25 million annually. The agreement includes union recognition, negotiations to settle disputes, rapid resumption of operations, and dismissal of injunctions after plants evacuate, with workers returning when called.
Des Moines report says for first time since January 8 sleet and rain, sun may melt part of the ice covering seven eighths of Iowa. Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed expects sunlight to reach the ground today in much of southern Iowa, ending a month long ice cover.
