Fire fighters on a relief train reached the Hol linger consolidated gold mine shaft at Timmins Ontario and found five men alive on the 675 foot level. They plan to press toward the 550 foot level where about 40 to 50 miners are believed trapped.
Sunny morning sparkled at Lincoln school during a birthday program for Abraham Lincoln. Miss Charlotte Foster led pupils and teachers in songs, recitations, and a flag salute as the Daughters of the Union Veterans presented a silk flag to the school, with Katherine Masson replying for the students. The event closed with The Star Spangled Banner.

Centerville Iowa February 11 the joint commission for the Southwest Coal Operators Association and the United Brotherhood of Miners adjourned with satisfaction over a new 1917 wage scale. Slight raises narrow class disparities raising machine runners to 22 cents per ton and some labor to 6.00 a day while others stay at 5.41 and 5.15. The new scale takes effect April 1 replacing the old March 31 expiry affecting about 50 miners across 21 mines in Appanoose county.

Washington high school lifted to its first Little Six victory on their home floor, edging Fairfield 22 to 18 in a fast, hard fought game. Fairfield led early with Hendricks scoring, and Washington surged in the third period with Fisher, Harold Tucker, and Floyd Tucker supplying the bulk of the offense to seal the win.
Washington and Fairfield produced a high pace game with Fisher scoring for Washington and Junkin for Fairfield. Bates and Hendricks added free throws. Lytle, Fisher, Harold Tucker and Bates stood out as Washington pressed. Bain and Floyd Tucker also shone. Muscatine faces Washington next. Ottumwa and Muscatine won on their floors in other Little Six action.
