Interior plan to open several Northwest reservations to settlement
Advices by the Spokane chamber of commerce from James R. Garfield's interior department report indicate Coeur d'Alene, Calville and other Northwest lands will likely open for settlement this year. Lands include Colville and Yakima reservations and more, with preliminary steps for opening next year. Spokane Indians leaders and federal officials also agreed to open Spokane reservation lands for free homestead entry and use remaining unallotted mountains for a forest reserve with timber sale revenue to Indians for 25 years.
