The commerce department urged foreign countries to reduce their purchases of U S oil to ease U S shortages. Following an embargo on shipments from East Coast ports the department asked foreign customers to cut requests for petroleum products and curb consumption in the first quarter.
In the fifth week of 1948 sub normal weather Congress was asked to aid Michigan industries hit by cold. Detroit officials estimate 125000 workers idled as plants cannot operate without gas and oil and urged the House Interstate Commerce Committee to seek more gas diversion to Detroit by Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co to the Federal Power Commission.
Louis Junior Rehm and Robert W. Norton of Davenport escaped serious injuries when their car left a curve on a highway two miles east of Washington Monday at 2 06 pm. Rehm, driving toward Washington, swerved to avoid an oncoming eastbound vehicle in the middle of the road and rolled into a ditch. The other vehicle did not stop. Norton's car was damaged about 500.
Washington high school's vocational agriculture students have secured 28 registered ewes 23 registered sows six market litters 16 baby beef 5 feeder steers 8 beef heifers and 4 dairy heifers for their projects this year. They plan additional stock purchases later and expect to run eight to ten supplementary practices and five to six improvement projects on their farms. About 7500 dollars worth of stock has been secured for a Junior Livestock show next summer.
Veterans and students surveyed 113 farms covering 22 071 acres to map soil conservation needs. Findings include 1360 acres contoured 200 acres terraced 4892 rods grass waterways 264 acres strip cropping 2463 acres legume seeding 870 acres limed 316 acres pasture improvement and 174 acres drainage tiles among other measures. Forty nine participants plan to enter the complete soil conservation contest.
Mrs. W. B. Dupuis president of the Womens Republican club of Washington county announces the Lincoln Day meeting at the Y W C A. E D Morrison Jr will be the guest speaker and the program will present the three Republican presidential candidates. A report from the Des Moines state meeting with Joseph Martin as main speaker will be included. All women of the county are invited.
The United Presbyterian church schedules its Wednesday prayer gathering for tomorrow at 7 30 PM at the United Presbyterian Home instead of the church. J M Finney, reader, requests attendees bring their Bibles for the study period.
Women in charge of the World Day of Prayer services to be held in the Christian church Friday February 13 at 2 00 p m point ed out today that although the Observance is being sponsored by the mission organizations of the various churches and the women will be in charge of the program It is hoped that everyone interested in furthering this Christian work will attend Men and women of all creeds and nations throughout the world are observing the day.
Merle Thrapp of West Chester collected bounty payments for 35 foxes yesterday at the office of county auditor Freda Bourgeois. Total payout was $52.50. Bourgeois said January bounties totaled $209.20, including $189 for foxes, $4.80 for gophers, $15.00 for ground hogs, and 0.44 for crows.
Members of the West Chester Federated and Methodist churches will observe World Day of Prayer with services at the Federated church on Friday February 13 at two o clock.

Winners of the L1 acre contest under Iowa Corn and Small Grain Growers Association and sponsored by the VFW will be announced after a state meeting in Ames. A banquet honor is planned with J S Russell hoped as speaker.
The first degree murder trial of Charles Ver Helst, 19, charged with strangling his 16-year-old high school sweetheart Arsene Line, was scheduled to begin in Mason City after delays. Ver Helst pleaded not guilty.
Sioux City police continued their investigation into an $8000 robbery at the Chesterfield Lounge, reported after Sunday night into Monday, with Detective Chief Harry Gibbons leading inquiries.
John Edward Brown age 67 died Monday at 5 30 pm in Washington county hospital after illness since last May. Funeral at Jones funeral home Wednesday at two with Rev Paul Wells. Burial Elm Grove cemetery. Born November 1 1880 in Perrin Missouri, he was the son of Thomas and Margaret Brown. He lived in Missouri early and moved to Washington 45 years ago. Survived by four brothers Patrick Rock Island W H Brown Ainsworth Frank Brown Pico California and Martin Brown Washington.
Police investigation ongoing after burglars removed a heavy safe weighing several thousand pounds from the establishment while owner Chris DeHaven was away. Information release is pending the investigation.
Des Moines reports the Iowa Supreme Court 5 to 3 declares the agricultural land credit tax law unconstitutional. The ruling blocks distribution of over 4.5 million dollars from the fund, with surplus returning to the general fund. The decision cites lack of public purpose and violation of uniformity and local law prohibitions.
A blaze in zero weather driven by a 50 mile per hour wind at the Hull Nursing Home in St Johns Newfoundland killed 34 aged and infirm residents after an oil stove explosion started the fire. Authorities say about 40 residents were housed and only 16 to 18 escaped as firefighters could not immediately search the ruins.
Iowa federal income tax receipts rose sharply in January, totaling about 90 million dollars versus 73 million a year earlier. The January 1947 calendar year total reached roughly 3.465 billion dollars, according to Frank Halpin, chief deputy of the state internal revenue department.
Miss Marjorie Wieland daughter of Mr and Mrs John Wieland Riverside returned home Tuesday after treatment at Mercy Hospital Iowa City for a serious cut on the leg from a coasting accident. Relations from Davenport and Burlington visited in Riverside during the weekend.
Following a fourth major grain price break in six days, corn wheat oats and soybeans fell to limit losses nationwide. The New York Stock Exchange and commodity exchanges across Chicago Kansas City and Minneapolis saw sharp declines. Retail prices for pork beef flour bread and lard also dropped with lower grocery store and butcher shop prices reported nationwide. Farmers kept cattle and hogs on the farm, tempering the livestock market despite reduced shipments.
Robert Wilkins a 20-year-old University of Iowa student was charged with forgery after seven worthless checks were passed in two hours. Detective L B Marshall arrested him in a downtown Cedar Rapids store as he prepared an eighth check.
Washington February 10. Senator Arthur Capper introduces a bill to transfer the government owned acetylene plant at Muscatine Iowa to the Agriculture Department. The measure would authorize operation by the Secretary of Agriculture or leasing to private interests for operation.
