President Truman asked Congress for prompt action to extend control over scarce materials including tin fats and oils rice antimony cinchona bark quinine quinidine and nitrogen fertilizer. He warned that expiration on February 29 would cause confusion at home and abroad and noted shortages remain acute since last July.
A. C. Kuipers, publisher of the Wellman Advance and Riverside Leader, has leased the papers to Eugene Goschke of Eddyville Iowa. Goschke will enroll in the University of Iowa law school. He has prior newspaper experience at Oskaloosa.

Lee county sheriff's offices report that 22 year old UE land Hill of Burlington was killed when his car overturned after swerving to avoid an Illinois bus on Highway 61 north of Keokuk. His wife Louise 20 and their 20 month old son were injured. Ira Benjamin of Keokuk drove the bus. Benjamin rescued the baby and helped extinguish the fire as bystanders aided the injured.

Roy Wohlsheid, 35, survived a home blast that killed his wife, 27, and five children in a six room Mt Pleasant residence. He escaped the stove explosion, tried to break into the kitchen, and was knocked down by the blast before extinguishing his flames in the snow. He remains hospitalized in critical condition.
