A column notes Joseph Gabrish seeks his pistol returned after his wife allegedly took the firearm to cause distress in a divorce action. In Audubon, a band saw derailment in a high school shop injured 15 year old Robert tecersen, who lost three fingers and was taken to a local hospital.
Farmer William Friedow took 25 chickens to a Whunauwha auction for charity. The first chicken sold and resold to total $100, while the other 24 brought an average above $5 each for the Finnish relief fund.
Van Buren county Farm Bureau directors vote to not renew A. J. Secor’s 22 year county agent contract. Directors cite terms not agreeable and plan to appoint a new agent in a few days.
At the Vinton annual egg and grain show Mrs J Yerkes exhibited brown eggs to win the grand champion prize. Mrs William Eldridge took first with white eggs. A Belle Plain High school team won the poultry judging. Harold Heth of Belle Plaine captured the individual score title.
IOWA CITY Coroner George C. Callahan says J. B. Kruse 57 owner of Kruse Motor Co Davenport died of self inflicted gunshot. The body found in a local hotel room with a revolver nearby identified by papers on the body. Kruse was married and had been dead about 24 hours.
Dr Ronald W DuShane superintendent of Columbus Indiana will deliver the principal address at the winter meeting of the Iowa Classroom Teachers association in Des Moines Harold Templeman Cedar Rapids president of the association will oversee the event
A 12 year old boy Lloyd Howard Jr an eighth grader at Woodbine school was snowballing girls on his way home when struck by a car. His right leg was severed below the knee and he bled to death while being rushed to Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines.
Mrs Ellen Edge of Marshalltown begins as manager of the Smart and Thrifts east side shop. She has long ready to wear experience including Gordon's, and has held roles in the Chamber of Commerce American Legion Auxiliary and Women's Club. She rooms at 502 South Marion Avenue with two sons in school. Irene Bickford and Claire Dusenberry stay on at the store.
Iowa preserves Abraham Lincoln's acceptance of his second term in a yellowed manuscript found in state archives. The document, written in Lincolns own hand, recounts the December 1864 meeting with the joint committee to notify re election. It details his cautious confidence, reliance on providence, and gratitude to the people, with subsequent shows of Lincoln's political acumen and loyalty to the union.
Elmer J Wulf and Viola Meeks of Ainsworth obtained a marriage license here today.
President Roosevelt told the American Youth Congress that Russia is a dictatorship and that U S sympathy runs 98 percent with Finland in resisting Moscow. He said the United States desires to aid Finland and mocked fears of a U S war over such aid while recalling his early hopes for Russia’s experiment.
Helsinki reports major Finnish victories over Russian forces along the Mannerheim line as the tenth day of sustained assault yields heavy losses for Russia. Officials deny bayonet fighting claims and note shortages in aircraft and anti aircraft ammunition, while ammunition remains adequate in other combat aspects.
Rules for drivers licenses issued by B B Bentzinger of the state highway patrol. Examines applicants in Washington weekly students must have license in possession while driving and may operate only with a licensed driver present on friends. Parents required for applicants under 16 with school permits and all must pass written and vision tests to receive a permit or license.
The Merchant Tailors and Designers Association of America named the best dressed in the United States at its Cleveland convention. Alfred Vanderbilt and Angler Biddle Duke head the list of two millionaires, with Paul V. McNutt called best dressed in politics and Thomas K B Dewey among those honored. Lucius Keebe and twenty others also received national fashion honors.
Stewart pupils entertained parents with songs dances and recitations at the school. Delia Campbell announced the program as master of ceremonies. A violin quartet Marjorie Winn Tommy Godwin Laura Jane Murphy and Patty Patterson performed with piano by Miss Christenson. The Stewart school orchestra and a first and second grade program followed with Danish greeting dance and magnets experiment.
A free two and a half hour event titled Magic Mirth Music and Movies will be hosted Monday at 7 00 PM in Washington's new armory. Sponsored by Smart Parrish Implement Company and McCormick Deering dealers, the show features radio stage and screen reviews with prizes for attendees. The firm urges punctual attendance to run the program on schedule, expecting a capacity crowd at this annual event.

An unexploded drifting mine dangered an English east coast town today as it loomed in the breakers off shore. Authorities ordered residents to open windows to reduce glass risk and warned roofs could be blown off within 500 yards if it exploded, with valuable properties within 300 yards of the shore. The mine drifted closer as the tide moved in, remaining unsafe to detonate.
The French Chamber of Deputies, after two days of secret debate on national defense, voted unanimous support for Prime Minister Eduard Daladier. A secret session occurred after opposition to the premier. In London, the Admiralty reported German planes sank two British navy trawlers with four officers and eighteen enlisted men killed.
Austin Miller and Raymond Gray of Kalona, William Hemmings of Washington and Herbert Herron of Wyman are named among five who took the test but failed to qualify.
A deadly tornado struck Albany Georgia at 410 AM sweeping the pecan capital. At least eight killed and many missing as 400 hurt. property damage exceeds 6 million dollars. Hospitals crowded with injured. National Guard and CCC crews assist. Red Cross aiding relief as governor directs efforts.
Iowa Supreme Court denied a re hearing in the state against William Crandall convicted of assault with intent to commit great bodily injury. The court, after previously sustaining the conviction, refused the request from Crandall’s attorney for a further review. County Attorney Richard A Stewart received notice from clerk B W Garrett.
Don P. Jackson driving a car crashed into Frank A. Kallaus’s stopped car and coal trailer on No. 1 near Washington. Frost and mist froze on windshields reducing visibility. Mrs. Huth Jackson sustained facial lacerations and a knee cut. both vehicles suffered heavy damage.
The official weather observer reports the minimum temperature in Washington last night was eight degrees below zero. The drop exceeded what yesterday’s forecast suggested, catching locals by surprise.
