Mrs. Mary Larimore files for divorce from Darwin Larimore in Sioux City asserting six months of cruelty. She cites an alleged “reducing system” as part of the abuse, noting her weight fell from 168 to 129 pounds.
Davenport report shows Scott County tax collections for 1959 at 98.66 percent. County Treasurer Ben F. Luette notes current collections totaled 2 239.68 dollars from a total levy of 2 270 119 dollars.
William Crissman Jr and Warren McAllister were named civic service award winners by the Young Men's Bureau. The honors were presented at a Senior Chamber of Commerce dinner for outstanding civic activity.
The Austin States Co. of Chicago bid 27500 for Pointer Brewing Co. assets in Clinton at a federal court sale. The bid was tentatively accepted pending court approval. The plant is said to exceed that value, so acceptance is not certain. Property includes real estate, building equipment and receivables.
Charles W. Joiner of Des Moines and the firm Miller Huebner Miller authored one of five prize winning articles on copyright law in the Nathan Burkan Memorial composition. Dean Mason Ladd of the University of Iowa announced the award. Joiner graduated last year from Iowa.
Dean Wilkes aged 12 of Raymond Iowa is reported in serious condition at University hospital Iowa City after brain tumor surgery. Authorities believe the tumor developed from a fall on ice about a year earlier. Neighbors dug a snow path through a heavy storm on January 15 to rush him for medical care.
Dallas Center farmer Dwight Thompson retrieved the pocketbook he lost in Des Moines in spring 1955 along with $2.56. The wallet lay unclaimed for five years before being found in the mailbox of CG W Noyes of Waukee, grandfather of Thompson's wife, leaving Thompson puzzled about its long journey and return.

Dr. W. G. Murray of Iowa State College reports fewer farm foreclosures in 1928 than since 1926. In 1958 550 mortgages foreclosed versus 1,875 in 1937, with most in western and southern Iowa. Foreclosures averaged 1,500 to 2,000 in the 1920s, peaking at 6,400 in 1922. 1959 may rise due to moratorium expiration.
At the February Washington Chamber of Commerce meeting a Hi Dietrich address highlighted farm program aims to boost soil conservation stabilize farm income and protect consumer prices. Committees were named for the year including agriculture chair J W Chandler and big days leaders with plans for a dollar day Feb 15 and a Feb 29 event.

A side sweep near Brighton on the Skunk River bridge involved vehicles driven by A. B. Carr of near Brighton and Prof. Fred Hink of Fairfield. No injuries were reported. both cars suffered damage. The Wink house driver reached Iowa City, while the Carr car collided with the bridge railing and was disabled.
A man replaced the front wheels of a vehicle with homemade runners and reported it now operates smoothly.
Des Moines reports that federal loans on Iowa's 1939 corn crop total more than 50 million dollars as of February 1. The government offers 57 cents per bushel. 88 million bushels sealed, plus 5 million old bushels resealed. Total under seal nationwide reaches 173 million bushels. Washington county records 527 285 bushels.
Washington reports 17 degree low with 32 degree high and three inches of snow drifting. roads remain clear. Iowa gets a fresh snow blanket from half to five inches, temperatures plunge below zero to 10 below at Spirit Lake and other towns.
DeMolay members plan to compete in the state DeMolay basketball tournament in Waterloo late March. At a Wednesday meeting they scheduled practices starting next week with coach Joe Duen at Stewart School gym. Tom Gray reported on a Burlington district officers meeting to boost attendance. Eugene Dunlap was welcomed as a new member.
Eveline Goodwin age 74 dies at 9:30 am at son Lloyd Goodwin's home 603 South Ninth avenue. Funeral 4 pm Sunday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev W J Stevens. Burial Elim Grove Cemetery. Survived by children Dora Solar Kansas City W H Goodwin Letts John M Clarence K Lloyd Washington Delia McCoy Muscatine Fred H Goodwin and others. One daughter Edna May Bry died ten years ago and one son Charles died four years ago. She leaves 1 grandson 12 great grandchildren and sister Mrs John Dunbar of Brighton.
The county AAA office reports educational meetings last week drew strong farmer turnout. Attendance ranged from twenty to fifty at Brighton, with high interest shown in producer and consumer welfare. Notifications of allotments were mailed to townships today and yesterday, with farm plans for 1940 to be prepared and explained by local committees to producers and landlords soon.
United Press reports Nazi planes bombed coastal shipping from the British Isles while Finnish forces repelled four Soviet assaults on the Mannerheim line with heavy losses. Finnish communiques claim Russians captured and then retreated from forts on the Karelian isthmus as a major offensive unfolds. A German bomber was shot down near the Firth of Forth and French premier Edouard Daladier faced a blocked parliamentary secret session amid espionage fears.
Twenty two tons of explosives at the Golden Gate fireworks plant exploded near Los Angeles causing injuries to three people. Mrs. Nettie Denman aged 50 fractured a leg while her son was scratched and bruised. Nearby residents Bragg and two watchmen were hurt or missing as homes and windows were damaged across the area.

DES MOINS Feb 9 Walter Rhodes an Iowa City quarry worker lost his final appeal to escape execution for murdering his wife Mabel by a loaded dynamite charge. The supreme court denied a rehearing of its decision that he must hang at Fort Madison. Governor Wilson can commute to life in prison or set an execution date. Rhodes killed his wife in February 1937 to marry another woman.

The program includes a Lincoln birth anniversary commemoration and marks the ninth Simultaneous Meetings Night nationwide attention. A Laurens resident born January 18 1840 celebrated her 106th birthday on January 18 with her five children. She recalls living near the Lincolns in Springfield Illinois and pioneering in northwestern Iowa with a family history tied to Abraham Lincoln.
