Iowa’s October to December sales tax receipts rose to 5.503 million dollars, an all time high, with officials predicting a final total near six million. The 2 percent levy is collected by merchants and remitted in the following quarter, amid booming Des Moines area retail trade.
The House voted 215 to 164 against adding a federal ballot provision to the soldiers voting bill and sent the legislation to conference. Speaker Rayburn named Worley Rankin Bonner Lecompte and Ellsworth as conferees to resolve differences.
Des Moines police say Leo E. Kielly of State Center confessed to driving the car that fatally injured a Des Moines man early New Year’s morning. Traffic Inspector Rayburn said Kielly, an implement dealer, will be charged with manslaughter. He is about 49, married, with no children.
Iowa Supreme Court ruled rural electric cooperatives cannot be taxed as they are non profit corporations. Exemption from state taxes for non profit corporations remains in effect, not repealed by implication by 1941 legislation. REA cooperatives were exempt during 1941 and 1942 and only after 1943 would they face normal tax statutes.
Tabor college has moved its operations to Des Moines under President Dr. R E OBrien, with classes in improvised rooms and furniture en route. In Tabor, dispute grows over possession of the campus as the city council considers repossession of the leased property.
Five men, the entire crew of a B 17 Flying Fortress based at Sioux City Army Air Base, parachuted to safety after engine trouble. The aircraft struck a hillside and burned three miles northwest of Emerson, Nebraska, as pilot Second Lieutenant William M Salmons ordered the bail out. Col. George A Blakely described the event.
A deputy revenue collector will be at Wellman on February 15 from eight in the morning until five in the afternoon at the town hall to assist taxpayers with income tax returns. The Washington post office office will be closed February 15 to 18.
Mrs. Alvin Jones received the camp paper at Tyndall Field showing Corporal Jones named Gunner of the Week for his squadron. The Crawfordsville native, son of Mr and Mrs John D Jones, is nearing completion of gunner training at the army air field in Panama City Florida three miles west of Crawfordsville.
Mrs. Leroy C. Gaese was granted a divorce on February 9 after accusing her husband of cruelty. She said he attacked her for bringing home a large meat package and taunted her about flirting with the butcher, leading to domestic strife.
Doris Jean Woodford 15, long missing since August, is identified as Mrs. Richard Griffith who was hospitalized after a Thursday auto crash near Raymond Illinois. Her father Perry Woodford of Akron Ohio says she married Richard Griffith alias Richard Stephens, a parolee from Atlanta prison last December. He reported she left Akron with Griffith August 22 after meeting him at a bus station.
Lt Governor Robert d D. Bine announced his bid for the Republican renomination for governor at the June primary. He signals intent to continue governing priorities and seeks party support for the statewide race.
Eagle Grove attorney and former Wright County official Lieut. Gov. Robert p. Blue announced his bid for the Republican nomination for Iowa governor. He has served as speaker of the house, and was lieutenant governor since 1942.
A pickup driven by Cur tie Snyder collided at an intersection with a car and trailer driven by Wayne H Mangold one mile south of the New Haven church west of town yesterday afternoon. Both drivers suffered minor injuries and the crash caused over $300 in damage to the vehicles.
The court granted two marriage licenses to Wilbur Rath and Rita Kuene man, both of Riverside, and to Faul KE, Martin and Anna Maa Graber, both of Crawfordsville.
Firemen raced to the Tom Deal residence at 1009 West Monroe Street after shingles on the roof ignited from a chimney spark. The blaze caused only a small hole in the roof and minor damage.
Justice of the Peace W S Eldridge fined Gene Jennings one dollar and costs on the charge of uttering a bad check. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon as reported in local court records.

Grimes widow of Dr Grimes who practiced medicine in Wapello years ago had been in failing health the last year. She taught in rural schools as a young woman and spent her life in the Morning Sun and Wapello communities where she was active in social church and civic organizations.
An error in Tuesday's Journal misreported that the Montgomery Ward store bought $20,000 in War Bonds during the 4th War Loan drive. The correction notes the store did not exceed a different amount.
