Wayland's volunteer fire department responded to a late evening alarm at the Don Ness residence. Crews found a mattress on fire in a children's room likely caused by an overheated electric blanket. Smoke and water damage reported. no injuries.
An elderly Oskaloosa pair, Paul William Hamlin and Lucy Hamlin, both 71, died Monday when their car slowed for a narrow bridge on Iowa 149. Danny Egger, 19, of Marengo rear-ended them, pushing them into a oncoming truck driven by Robert Haworth, 21, of Cedar Rapids. Haworth survived, Egger unhurt.
Nevada casinos earned a record 633 million in 1971, a 10.2 percent rise from 1970, according to the State Gaming Control Board. Edward Bowers called the result a respectable showing and noted the strong national business environment.

Washington's city council approved contracts for water main work with Chalupa Brothers at 102000 dollars and a water tower with Chicago Bridge and Iron at 192100 dollars. Work to begin when weather permits plus purchase of a Hach Testing Unit and renewal of the Iowa Cafe liquor permit. The alley closure petition in block 22 was rejected after zoning commission recommendation. Seven hundred dollars were allotted to a summer baseball program with the school system, to be run for high school age boys, pending school board approval.
Iowa United Methodist Church representatives urged lawmakers to keep long standing property tax exemptions for parsonages rectories and related church housing. They argued removal would shift burdens to churchgoers and urged government efficiency and closing tax loopholes instead.
The Iowa House stood firm against dropping the legal drinking age to 19, rejecting a Senate amendment. The vote ensures the measure returns to the Senate, with debates over other Senate amendments ongoing and several lawmakers weighing compromises on adult rights for 18-year-olds.
Legislative Fiscal Gerry Rankin said Iowa spent 26 204 on failing to uphold the 1971 legislative reapportionment plan. About 25 000 covered the Iowa Supreme Court, with minor sums from the Executive Council, the Attorney General, and the Legislative Service Bureau. Rep. Michael Kennedy called it a waste of money, accusing lawmakers of spending state funds to protect political power.

President Thieu told ambassadors in Paris and Washington to rebuke US negotiators over Vietnam peace talks and to seek Saigon clearance for any future statements. He demanded Rogers clarify his "flexible" resignation remark and criticized the peace offer as unconstitutional without assembly approval.
Washington lawmakers rush emergency legislation to end a 123 day West Coast dock strike before recess. Senate bill backed by Nixon would bind both sides to arbitration. House proposal would empower a court order and limit cargo handling to agriculture, military, and Hawaii shipments.

The event, originally to introduce a new product line, now welcomes other interested persons. Due to machinery in operation, visitors over 12 are admitted.
