Factory pipes freeze caused sprinkler damage at Washington Manufacturing
Water froze in the sprinkler system of the Washington Manufacturing Company office area when pipes burst during noon hour. No electrical wiring was damaged, but telephones were knocked out and papers soaked. Insulation absence near the area caused the cooling that froze the pipes, according to manager Robert Reed. Insurance covers the loss.

Tragic Montgomery Fire Kills 27 at Penthouse Restaurant
Flames roared through Dale's restaurant atop a ten story building in Montgomery trapping about 40 diners and workers. The blaze, possibly sparked by a cigarette in the cloakroom, killed 27 with many bodies later counted twice as funeral homes rattled the toll. The Victoria decor venue became a flaming coffin as patrons fled onto ledges and rooftops. Among the dead were Ed Pepper and wife, with many victims identified as restaurant staff.

Des Moines Iowa Republican leaders unveiled a three point plan for legislative reapportionment.
