Clarence Day age 46 died in a third floor fire at 1124 Locust Street Dubuque Sunday afternoon. He was alone in the apartment when the blaze trapped him. Leo Vandriel on the second floor was rescued by firemen. Smoke and water damaged the first and second floors. Day survived by his wife and two sons.
Des Moines reports a two day meeting set for Tuesday and Wednesday at Hotel Kirkwood to plan new egg drying plants. Representatives from the food distribution administration will discuss Iowa expansion to supply military and domestic needs with similar talks planned for other Midwest states in February.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Peters of Lost Nation Clinton county were hit by an eastbound City of San Francisco train while en route to a morning church service. Mrs Peters was killed on scene and Mr Peters died later at Jane Limb hospital Clinton at 4 30 pm.
Edward A. Sager 71 died Sunday at St Joseph Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. A Democrat, he served on the Iowa Supreme Court from 1938 until Jan 1 1943, born Oct 17 1872 on a Bremer county farm in Maxfield township and lived most of his life in the area.
Dr. Clovis Meyers of Council Bluffs has earned the army navy E award for superior achievement in chemistry research in the wartime nylon reclaim program. Now with the army chemical warfare department in Wilmington Delaware Meyers helped develop the process to reclaim nylon thread by unraveling stockings with a hydrolizer and dissolving them to a liquid state.
A Leghorn hen on Tom Kruger’s farm near Sibley laid an egg 81 inches long and five inches in circumference before dying. The unusual egg is on display at the Kruger farm as a local curiosity.
Myrta A. Jeffrey longtime Washington resident dies at Washington County Hospital after strokes. Funeral at L. A. Jones Funeral Home Wednesday at four, with Dr. R. C. Keagy officiating. Interment in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born February 14, 1873, daughter of William Riley and Lyda Wright Jeffrey.
Six Washington churches drew larger crowds as the winter series neared its fourth night at the Church of Christ. Rev. Ivan Riess urged church members to live as Christian epistles, written by the Spirit of God on the hearts of believers.
About 200 boys and girls attended a State theater show Saturday morning for scrap copper and brass donations. Nearly that many pounds of metal were contributed to gain admission to see Henry Aldrich for President. Manager Ralph Pratt praised the turnout as on par with similar drives aiding war machine production.
Harry Ernest Bauer, 13, died early this afternoon at the county hospital after being brought there yesterday. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Bauer and grandson of former Supervisor Fred Bauer. The family home is just east of West Chester. The body was taken to the JL A Jones funeral home for arrangements.

G E Mace county chairman announces a 1943 war bond campaign with a 5000 dollar quota roughly 20 percent above 1942. The county will be organized in towns and townships with districts and many workers. A county wide pledge drive will urge yearlong bond purchases to meet or exceed prior pledges and align with ten percent wage investments. Home bond service will be offered through the chairman for those ill or shut in, with headquarters in the Ford garage office.
Anita Suplee 54, longtime Anita resident, was struck and killed Saturday night by a car driven by Wayne Overmyer as Suplee crossed Highway 148 to reach a rooming house. Police called the accident unavoidable.
Funeral services for James Frank Tierney, 77, were conducted at the L. A. Jones funeral home with Rev H W Munster officiating. Burial followed in Lexington cemetery. Died Saturday afternoon at his sister Mollie Tierney’s home three miles northwest of West Chester after years of ill health. He was born June 9 1865 in Cedar township and lived in the county all his life. Surviving: two daughters Mrs Tony Meath of Brihton and Mrs Ralph Stephens of Keota, two sons Donald Tierney of Muscatine and Silvold Tierney of Montevideo Minnesota. He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias in West Chester and a lifelong farmer.
Harry Russell Wolfe 35 died at 7 45 this morning at the state hospital in Glenwood Iowa. The body will be sent to Washington for burial with time to be announced. Funeral arrangements are handled by L A Jones Funeral Home and a service is expected at 3 o clock Tuesday afternoon at the Jones funeral home.
Former President Herbert Hoover warned of an extremely grave shortage of food metals and oil unless one million workers are moved from other jobs or the armed forces to farms factories and mines. The statement was reported from Washington D C and mentions Mollie Tierney of the Westchester community and six grandchildren two great grandchildren as part of the personal context.

Fred Strackbein, 56, was attacked by a bull while doing chores on the George Strackbein farm. He sustained a punctured lung, fractured ribs, a broken collar bone, and other injuries. He received treatment for his wounds.

Washington reports that shoe sales were halted in about 200000 stores as rationing limits civilians to roughly three pairs per year. Stamp No 17 in war ration book one allows one pair any time through June 15, with Byrnes stating rationing ensures adequate footwear for the duration of the war.
