Washington's town clock in the court house tower will advance an hour Sunday evening to begin observed daylight saving time. Clerk Mona Carris said the clock will be set just after six to show eight strokes, signaling the new schedule ahead of Monday morning official time.
The Washington schools showcased musical progress at their winter concert Thursday night. The high school band of 65 performed the main program while the junior band matched in size with a preliminary set. Both groups, directed by Maurice Brayton, featured about 120 students and displayed notable instrumental development.
Washington announces expansion of United States army air forces to 2,000,000 personnel with 1,000,000 serving this year and double that later. Plan includes 185,000 planes for 1942 1943 and adding air training at West Point with cadets graduating as pilots to save a year.
Secretary Frank Knox announced the United States submarine S-26 was sunk in a surface collision off Panama on January 24. Divers found the wreck on January 29 at 300 feet with no survivors. Three bridge men were rescued: Lt. Commander Earl C. Hawk, Lt. Robert E. N. Ward, and Joe B. Hurst.

News from Crawfordsville and Washington reports the death of Mrs Don Bradshaw a former Crawfordsville young woman in Kendallville Indiana hospital from an automobile accident. Details were not received but it is believed she and her husband were traveling to Crawfordsville when the crash occurred.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Sherman’s funeral home for Mrs. Bradshaw who died in the incident at Niagara Falls. Burial will be in Crawfordsville. She was 25, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mitchell and married last August to Don Bradshaw.
An all day meeting of county agents club agents and home demonstration agents in southeastern Iowa was held with J W Chandler and J H Donald in charge. The 45 county and club agents met at the YMCA Community room, 11 demonstration agents met at the Farm Bureau office, J W Merrill assisted. Plans discussed for carrying on the extension service educational program. The event was one of five similar district meetings statewide.
Allied war craft reported sinking an enemy cruiser and transport while damaging another off Amboina and Borneo as Japanese forces mounted attacks on Singapore Java and Sumatra. Dutch and British defenses stiffened with heavy shelling and air raids amid warnings of a possible invasion of Java and Surabaya.
Washington county residents are urged to move clocks forward one hour before sleeping Sunday so they wake Monday on the new daylight saving time. The change takes effect at two oclock Monday nationwide.
