Art Senske 59 and his wife with daughters Linda 18 Gail 13 were stranded nine miles from home when a blizzard hit on the way back from church. They survived 18 frozen hours with improvised coverings until a snowplow and sheriff's car rescued them at dawn.
Iowa city officials at a league workshop urged new revenue options for municipalities including payroll franchise and wheel taxes. Des Moines mayor Iles backed utility franchise taxes and car wheel taxes to fund street work, while Lorin Miller pressed parent responsibility to curb juvenile delinquency.
Mrs Maude Leona Enfield, 55, died at her Oxford area home after a long marriage spent in Wellman. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 30 p m at the Wellman Methodist Church with Dr Paul Dietterich officiating. Burial will follow in Wellman cemetery. She was the daughter of Harvey and Mable Maddison and wife of Ivan Enfield since 1928. Survivors include her husband two sons Charles of Iowa City and Richard of Oxford a daughter Mrs Richard Short of Burlington two sisters Mrs Steve Doolen of Lay Colorado and Mrs Elmer Waller of Keota a brother George Maddison of Marengo and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Mr and Mrs Stanley Foster hold a commanding lead after the seventh round of the U s Men s Pinochle Marathon with 7370 points. Towyn Davies followed with 5660 and Thelma Garrett and Helen Goodin had 5380, among top ten standings.
Washington Community High School forms the Top 20 singing group with Vernon Feuerhelm as adviser. Members include Sara Knupp Pat McClure Gladys Sechulty Linda Crone Cheryl Keating Ross Latta Sharon Lowry Nancy Osincup Betty McConnell Rita Murphy and others with accompanists Bonnie Miller Mary Carson and Joe Kerr.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Boshart will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the R. K. Crayne Funeral Home Mt. Pleasant. She died Monday afternoon in Mt. Pleasant and was a former resident of the Wayland community.
Oscar Davis, 53, former Louisa County district court clerk, pleads guilty to embezzling about $4,150 from court accounts to cover medical bills for his wife. He resigned Jan 3 after a 14 year tenure. Davis faces sentencing at 10 a.m. Friday before Judge E. O. Newell.
Twenty Izaak Walton committees from the Chicago chapter met at the Walton club house Monday to map activities for 1962. Corbin Crawford, first district director, spoke on Iowa division redistricting into ten districts to improve state representation and organizational efficiency.

Lucy Adams McArtor died this morning at Shenk Rest Home in Wellman where she had lived four years and been bed fast for three. Formerly of Washington, funeral arrangements are with Powell Funeral Home of Wellman with burial in the local cemetery. Survived by daughter Mrs. Carrie Norman of Washington and two sons Elmer McArtor of Crawfordsville and Walter McArtor of Iowa City.
Max Mitchell lifelong Washington County resident and Crawfordsville businessman announces Republican bid for county board of supervisors. He has 14 years on the Crawfordsville city council and a decade with county work. The race also includes Howard Anderson. Lloyd Walker will not seek re election.
After round seven in the Y's Men's bridge marathon Mrs T R Phillips and Mrs M L McCreedy hold the lead with a 12 730 net. Kermit Jones couple sit second at 12 300. Other top ten pairs include Nate Young and Charles Snyder Dave Elder Chic Robison Gilbert Mills Don Ellingsworth Charles Berdo and John Baldrige tied at 7 610 and Leonard Llewellyn at 7 330.
Kiwanis Travelogue presents Berlin The Island City at Washington High School auditorium at 7 30 tonight. Arthur F Wilson depicts life in a divided city with rare East Berlin footage and an historical view of Berlin's reconstruction economy culture and youth issues. Season tickets or door admission available.
Local National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association members will donate beauty services during National Beauty Salon Week February 11 to 17. Marcia Robinson says cosmetologists will visit Washington County Home Pines Rest Home Sunny Haven Rest Home and nearby rest homes giving a welcome beauty lift. Last year the Washington Iowa unit earned national recognition for most institutional welfare services among all U S cities under 25 000 population.
The State College of Iowa band directed by Karl Holvik will play at Washington High School at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday February 15. Guest artists Sigurd Rascher and his daughter Karin will join, with a saxophone clinic at 7 p.m. Both events are open to the public. admission is 25 cents for students and 35 cents for adults. Washington is among nine southeastern Iowa stops this month.
A bomb exploded on the Ville de Bordeaux steamship in Bone injuring crew and killing four, including a civil unrest police officer and a woman bound for France. Gunmen attacked Jean Oudinot’s car in Algiers, seriously wounding him and fatally injuring his Moslem chauffeur. In Oran, the Echo dOran plant was seized to print 20000 copies of an OAS edition, as violence widens with 659 dead and 1113 wounded since Jan 1 according to police tallies.
Helene Dillon author of the Whats Cookin column in the Evening Journal has been accepted as a member of the Iowa Press Women Inc. Dillon resides in Columbus Junction Iowa.
UPI reports thousands of Japanese students welcomed Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy at Waseda University as hecklers led by 21-year-old Yuzo Tachiya interrupted the talk. Kennedy resumed with an eight minute democracy note after the PA system was sabotaged.
President Kennedy asks Congress for a 5.7 billion five year education package funding public schools teachers salaries and college construction and student aid. The plan totals 2.1 billion for general aid and 2.1 billion for higher education with 747 million for teacher training and 600 million for medical and dental school building and scholarships.
A Washington auto salesman Wayne Marston earns $25 after a mystery rider tests his courtesy and selling skills at Per dock Oldsmobile Cadillac. The rider travels to dealer showrooms to measure how salesmen perform and he praised Marston for nearly selling the car during a lunch hour test.
Moscow reports the Soviet Foreign Ministry dismissed claims of an assassination attempt on Premier Nikita Khrushchev as humbug and unfounded. The note followed rumors linked to his absence, with officials stating Khrushchev is fit and active.
