Oklahoma City officers traced a burglary at Mud Product Inc to a freight train. A plank on a railcar jammed the back door, prying it open but nothing was stolen, leaving investigators puzzled by the odd method.
Des Moines widow Viva Fairless, 62, shot Willard Moore, 65, in his home, then killed herself, police and coroner say. Moore was an elderly musician and attorney. a note left by Fairless indicated they sought death together. Neighbors reported long brooding after family losses. entry to the home was forced after a neighbor alerted police around 7 am.
Col. W. R. Durbin outlines the Quar termaster Corps plan to raise army chow quality. The program includes food research training for cooks and more variety in garrison and field rations. He cites fresh vegetables and meat for frontline troops in Korea and notes standards have changed to fit modern soldiers.
Washington high school hosts the annual Little Six chorus festival on Thursday February 7 at 7 30 p.m. Vocal music students from Washington Mt Pleasant and Muscatine perform under Ralph Williams University of Minnesota director. Tickets at the door. rehearsals begin at 9 a.m. with critic judging by Mr Williams. Washington's chorus is directed by Robert Ferrell.
Attorney Leland Forrest filed a $20,000 lien in district court against a $40,000 judgment won by Tommy Ellis, 19, now serving 50 years for murder in Fort Madison. Ellis claimed county jail guards beat him, contributing to a mental state that led to the 1945 stabbing death of Flora A. Bryan during a robbery.
Washington county families and all interested in scouting are invited to a family night scout dinner at Washington United Presbyterian church Thursday start 6 45 p m as part of National Boy Scout Week. A Boy Scout mayor and city council election is planned for Wednesday at city hall, with a theater pass offer for scouts.
Senator Burnet Maybank plans to introduce a one year extension of wage price rent and production controls under the Defense Production Act to cover firms and households until next June 30. The bill would keep major provisions unchanged except for dropping the butter and cheese import restriction. Maybank says the move gives Congress time to act while President Truman seeks a two year extension and stronger price controls.
Funeral services for Mrs. Frank McFarlane 74 will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jones funeral home with Dr Evert Haney presiding. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Mrs. McFarlane died Monday February 4 after sudden illness Saturday afternoon. Surviving are three children Glen McFarlane Norfolk Nebraska Robert McFarlane Washington and Mrs Claude Woods Washington six grandchildren and two sisters Mrs J G Arnold Chinook Montana and Mrs George Horsely Nakusp British Columbia Canada.
John Gamon president of the Washington County Farm Bureau addressed the Men’s Brotherhood at the Christian church dinner meeting. He urged voting, criticized many spokesmen, noted only 6 percent turnout last election, and called for free enterprise or government control. A business meeting followed and church ladies served dinner.
Between 1928 and 1947 the bituminous coal mining industry paid about 345 million dollars in Federal income taxes. This figure highlights the long term tax contribution of coal producers during these two decades.
The body of Mrs. Steven Sams, about 9, will be brought here from Sloan Iowa. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Stephens funeral home with Rev kk. C. Sears in charge. North Korea’s Nam Il to present a draft of principles. Allies vow to reject admission of the two Communist states and a return to the 38th parallel as border.
Two Chinese Communist infantry companies attacked the Imjin river line driving back two UN outposts on the western front. UN troops withdrew from one hill but later reoccupied a position northwest of Yonchon in sub zero temperatures. fighting continued along the front with initial Chinese gains followed by counter moves.
President Truman will remain on the New Hampshire presidential ballot after advising NH Secretary of State Enoch Fuller that he will not remove his name. He cited Democratic support and the nonbinding nature of primaries as reasons to wait before announcing a reelection decision.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Reed 66 who died Sunday in Chicago are planned for Wednesday at 2 20 p m at Brighton Presbyterian Church. The body will be moved to Omar Hoskins funeral home. Survivors include four sons Reed Horton David Floyd and Hubert, two brothers Raymond and Elmer, a sister Mrs Arch Huston and four grandchildren.
A top price control official said ceilings may be lifted from consumer items such as clothing textiles and shoes early next summer. Decontrol discussions will continue under a new committee before DiSalle leaves in mid February to campaign for the Senate in Ohio.
