United Nations Commander reports negotiators moved closer to an armistice within the foreseeable future. An Allied spokesman notes major points remain disputed though atmosphere improved and new plenary sessions planned to outline final terms and troop withdrawal conditions.
Morris denies links to Communist fronts and China International Foundation profits tied to United Tanker Corp. He brings in Lewes E. Yavner as investigator and will meet with Attorney General J. Howard McGrath. Morris insists he has not benefited financially and aims to prove his integrity.
Fire destroyed seven units of a tourist motor court north of Des Moines, forcing owners Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Wilhelm and one guest to flee. The blaze caused about 20 000 pounds in damage. No injuries occurred as volunteer firefighters from Saylor battled the flames. The Wilhelms and the guest relocated to a nearby tourist court.

Three suspects were seized including 41 year old William Skally in a West Side tavern as undercover agents posed as buyers of 50 thousand dollars in fake money. The scheme also produced phony service bond certificates found recently in New York.

Fort Belvoir Virginia police say seven people who knew the combination were questioned about an inside burglary of a Fort Belvoir safe. The thief carried away 48901 dollars mostly in cash from weekend post exchange receipts stored inside a wire mesh cage.

Rev Milo J Phillipi of St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed delivered a sermon at a Union Church service honoring Box Scouts of Washington at the start of National Boy Scout week. He urged Scouts to pattern their lives after Shadrach Meshach and Abednego and avoid conforming to the crowd as he stressed individual ideals.

New York UI Jon Jamin Fairless president of United States Steel Corp warned that wage demands from steelworkers would trigger inflation and damage the economy. He testified before a six man panel of the wage stabilization board set up by President Truman to avert a steel strike. He accused CIO leaders of using the steel industry as a battleground to undermine wage controls.

Over 200 young people from Washington county churches gathered at the YMCA for a union Call to United Christian Youth Action. Duane Martin presided with Dr. Clyde Canfield president of Tarkio College in Missouri as afternoon speaker.

Rudy W. Knottnerus 48 died at home after a heart attack. He served with the national guard and the 302nd Quartermaster Battalion in World War II, later with the 168th Infantry. He is survived by his wife, his mother, a brother in Portland, and two sisters in Washington. Funeral services set for Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. born November 3, 1905 in Washington County to David G. and Sophia Hindahl Knottnerus. Married to Clyla May Engle January 10, 1925.
Two Riverside residents were seriously injured after slipping on ice near St Marys hall. Mrs George Deutsch 72 suffered a fractured hip and underwent surgery at Mercy hospital Iowa City. Sister Mary Prudentius a St Marys school teacher sustained two arm fractures and a shattered elbow and will have surgery next Wednesday. Washington Lodge No 26 AF and AM to hold first degree work February 6.
Paul Boyd, a former Washington resident, buys R and R Market in Brighton and assumes management. Reared in the community, he previously worked for Benner Tea, A and P in Des Moines, and Doudna in Columbus Junction as a sausage maker. He left Washington to join the armed forces in World War II and will focus on wholesale and retail sausage and bologna.
Funeral services for Henry Rath aged 64 who died February 2 1952 in Bellville will be held Tuesday at 2 pm in the Riverside Methodist church. Arrangements by Sorden and Adams. Rath born July 12 1887 in Davenport son of John and Lena Rath. Survived by two sons Lester D Rath Champaign Illinois and Earl D Rath Los Angeles California. seven brothers and two sisters. Preceded in death by one sister Ella Coon.

A Chicago man, Joseph A Soffietti, 27, allegedly kidnapped state patrolman Charles Bendlage near Bloomfield after a traffic stop and stole the patrol car. Soffietti admitted the crime but gave false names. fingerprints were sent to the FBI to confirm identity and charges of kidnapping and aggravated robbery were anticipated.
Mrs. Frank McFarlane aged 74 of 311 East Van Buren Street died this morning after a three day illness. Funeral services are set for 2 pm Thursday February 7 at Jones funeral home with Dr. Evert Haney in charge. She was born April 12, 1877 and leaves three children: Robert F. McFarlane and Mrs. Claude Woods of Washington and Glenn McFarlane of Nebraska.
