Washington firemen answered a 10 30 a m alarm at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street. A blaze broke out in a building housing the Talleyrand Amusement Co. but caused little damage and was quickly controlled.
A pizza party for junior and senior high youth is at the Washington YMCA from 9 30 to 11 pm tonight following the Washington Oskaloosa high school basketball game in the Washington gym. Non member cost 75 cents member 50 cents. Chaperones include Mr and Mrs Vanderlinden Mr and Mrs Wells Mr and Mrs Brock Mr and Mrs King Matt Ross Kirk Helmstead and Don Turner.
The Heart of Teaching program will be held at Washington Junior High School on February 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. It aims to address major educational concerns and improve ways to guide students under pressure. Parents students and teachers are urged to participate as an outgrowth of last year’s Washington Community School District needs assessment.
An equipment failure at the Iowa Southern Utilities central substation cut power in Washington area homes and businesses around 7:30 a.m. It was restored about 10 minutes later. The outage affected the central business district and southern residential areas, rural customers southwest of Washington, and the communities of West Chester and Wayland, caused by a lightning arrester failure at the substation.
Eugene T. McGaa of Riverside had his sentencing postponed a week after a January 21 conviction in Washington County District Court for assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury. The delay allows time to complete a pre sentence investigation, per District Judge Ira Morrison.
Richland resident Gary Oswalt is appointed to the Keokuk County Conservation Board for a five year term. Ollie’s William Emmack is named to the Veterans Affairs Commission for three years. Supervisor chairman Homer Kerr will serve on the board of supervisors with Warren Howard and Doris Brock on the county board of Social Welfare.
United Press International reports Americans east of the Mississippi saw a temporary break as temperatures moderated to near normal. An emergency energy bill opened gas supplies to the eastern states while Buffalo, New York, faced new snow disruptions. A sharp cold front aims at the Midwest and East, with single digit highs expected in the upper Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley by Saturday. The weather crisis has idled over 3 million workers in two weeks, raising economic costs.
Washington County officials plan to interview applicants next week to replace David and Grace Bauer now finishing 14 years as administrators of the county home. The board hopes to hire by April 1 to allow a month of overlap for a smooth transition. The Bauers, ages 62 and wife, will travel for a year after retirement. The board also set 1:30 p.m. Feb 14 for a public hearing on federal revenue sharing funds and 9 a.m. March 8 on the county budget with hearings in the courthouse conference room. A separate motion authorized the auditor to consult the County Historical Society about preserving ancient records slated for destruction in courthouse housekeeping.

About 700 local teacher leaders from across Iowa will gather at the Conway Civic Center in Waterloo February 3 5 to shape policy for the 31 000 member Iowa State Education Association Delegates will elect a vice president approve over 100 resolutions set ISEA positions and adopt a 1977 78 program budget Washington educators Delbert Soper Sharon Timm and Fred Stark represent the Washington Education Association ISEA president Richard Staver and executive secretary Neil Curtis will report NEA president John Ryer will speak to delegates.
Washington County announces February food stamp sale dates. February 7 serves city residents, February 8 covers other county areas, and February 22 is for all county residents. Purchases at the Department of Social Services Office, 212 North Iowa, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Former Iowa Beer and Liquor Control Department official Leslie D. Pinckney was fired amid a widening probe into bribes tied to liquor store leases. Investigators say Pinckney pressured contractors to buy plans from Structural Design Inc. for state stores and accepted illegal payments from Build-A-Rama. The case, now before a Polk County grand jury, also involves Joan Ballantyne who admitted a $200 finder’s fee in Cherokee site purchase. Governor Ray awaits BCI findings on Ballantyne’s council role.
Rolfe Postmaster Don Spencer explains small town mail service allows delivering non-routinely addressed mail. A Kalamazoo letter marked Great Grandmother Rolfe Iowa was found, with a paper note advertising for a Kalamazoo great-grandchild. Mrs Harry Dickey, 87, claimed the letter ten days later.
