The Coffee Car on West Washington Street was broken into during the weekend with cartons of cigarettes and soft drinks stolen. Police were called this morning to investigate the entry via a broken back door, marking the establishment's repeated thefts in recent months.
The first combined beginning band rehearsal will be held in the junior high music room from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Directed by Fred Stark the group includes students from Brighton Lincoln and Stewart schools. Bus transportation is provided but parents must pick up after rehearsal. The band will meet weekly and perform in the spring program.
Plans are complete for the annual SomeSing Special to be held Saturday evening February 9 in the Washington High School auditorium. Tickets cost 1 dollar with children under 12 admitted free. Proceeds aid YMCA World Service. The show will offer varied entertainment for the whole family.
Fort Madison School Board President George Ward announced likely stricter rules to curb in school smoking. The plan would raise suspensions from three days to one semester for a third offense, with two weeks for a second and three days for a first offense as required by state law.
A fire at Helzberg Jewelers in Mason City caused smoke and fire damage to two clothing stores and a gift shop. Firefighters arrived around 5 20 a m and worked about two and a half hours. Officials said the blaze may have started from a defective wire and noted no link to last week's $200 000 downtown fire that destroyed five businesses.
Gov. Robert D. Ray said Iowa Highway Patrol shifts may move troopers to areas hit by weekend trucker protests along Interstate 80 and U.S. 20 between Mason City and Dubuque. He ruled out immediate National Guard use but left that option open if violence spreads. Local police and the BCI assist. several gunfire incidents have been reported.
A Washington County Shrine Club delegation toured St. Louis Shriner Hospitals for Crippled Children, meeting 67 inpatients and observing genuine happiness among all. The visit highlighted the hospital’s 100 beds, outpatient growth, and services including artificial limb fabrication, barber shop, classrooms, and donated care funded by Shriners.

Union leaders say executives will decide next Tuesday on launching the walkout, set to begin Sunday, with regional votes ranging from 9 to 93 percent in areas like Yorkshire, South Wales, and Derbyshire.
