Railroad Man Wins Canadian Open Sled Race in Manitoba
Laird Quellette of Canadian National Railways won the 1142 mile dog sled mush in 17 hours seven minutes and 85 seconds to claim a $1000 prize and the Canadian open title at The Pas Manitoba. Only American entrant Lou Wheeler quit after a dog died and another became ill as the four day festival opened with quirky chest hair contests and rat-skinning events.

Russians Open Berlin Highway Amid Traffic Controls
Western powers planned an embargo on steel shipments to Soviet occupied Germany while the Soviet Union allowed Berlin traffic for four hours and forty five minutes. Soviet checks at Eichholz Herrenburg reduced Berlin bound truck flow to two to four per hour, creating a 25 truck backlog. Korean Patrol Boat Fires on Russ Ship
South Korean navy fired a warning shot at a Soviet tanker identified as the Pamir after it invaded Korean territorial waters near Kuryongpo. The 6,000 ton ship did not show a flag until after the shot, hoisting the Soviet flag but continuing moving. A second unidentified vessel sighting was reported, possibly the Pamir.
