A new men's social and community service group the Washington A Mers Kiwanis Club was officially chartered at a Saturday ceremony at the Washington Golf and Country Club. About 165 attendees saw Gov. Vince Nelson pass the charter to Jack Eaton, club president, inaugurating the 12 member AMers, the second Kiwanis club in the area. The club meets Fridays at 8:50 a.m. and was sponsored by the noon club to accommodate men who cannot attend noon meetings. Charter officers include Eaton Burt Gibson Lucht and Behan, with directors Malone Brake Borchardt Hendricks Hotle. The AMers are the first new Division IX club in the Iowa Nebraska District, now totaling ten clubs in the region. Dignitaries from Kiwanis, Optimists, Rotary, Y's Men, Lions, and the Chamber attended the ceremony. Special music by Charminaires accompanied the chartering.

A weekend blaze in Mount Vernon Iowa caused about 250000 in damage to five storefronts and an apartment, with the fire contained before City Hall. Mayor Nicholas Berry announced a rebuilding plan meeting and praised volunteer firefighters from 10 nearby communities. one minor injury occurred to a Lisbon firefighter.

Ray opposes death penalty in Iowa criminal code
Gov. Robert D. Ray said he would not favor reinstating the death penalty or no knock provisions in the proposed criminal code revisions. Sen. Gene Glenn supports death penalty reinstatement for serious killings. Ray questioned the no knock clause and warned the code rewrite could be bogged down by disputed sections.
