Stephen Smith a former University of Iowa student admitted burning his draft card to provoke debate on the Viet Nam war and was found guilty of mutilating his selective service card. Judge Roy Stephenson upheld the law’s constitutionality and set sentencing after a pre-sentence investigation. Smith remains free on bond.

Wilbur Chester Wasson, 71, died in Wellman after years of poor health. Born October 31, 1895 in Holbrook Kansas, he served in World War I and was a member of the American Legion. He faced up to 2 years 4 months. Taylor claimed $80 sale was for a masquerade party while witness Pvt. Michael Laird testified Taylor knew the uniforms were for an escape.

President Johnson urged to adopt $2 billion automation plan

Balloon skydiver’s risky 23 mile ascent ends in dramatic landing
Skydiver Nick Piantanida rode a balloon to 123,500 feet over the Midwest then failed to detach oxygen lines. the gondola detached and he free fell for five miles before his parachute opened. He was treated in Elmore, Minnesota and said a new free fall record could come in 2-3 months.

United States backs action to end Viet Nam war at UN
United Nations Security Council members began private talks to gain agreement on resuming the Geneva conference as a path to peace in Vietnam. Jordan earned a procedural victory by placing the Viet Nam conflict on the agenda with nine affirmative votes. Russia and Bulgaria opposed while France Mali Nigeria and Uganda abstained. The vote was procedural, so it did not count as a veto. Ambassador Akira Matsui led the immediate discussion following the vote.

Trucker killed as elevator plunges four floors
Des Moines truck driver Clifford Young, 41, was killed when his truck backed into an open elevator shaft at the Wallace Homestead Co. building and plummeted four floors. Witnesses said the elevator door was open at street level but the car was one floor above. The truck landed inverted, killing Young, a Tension Envelop Corp. driver.
