Grinnell firefighters battled a blaze at the Grinnell Body and Axle Co repair shop in northwest Grinnell for over three hours. Damage amount not determined. Fire officials believe the start was from a defective stovepipe.
Burlington Judge Paul McCord granted a mandamus ordering the Middletown school district to arrange transport for three Daniel E. Jones children. Jones said directors refused to provide transportation as required by law.
Judge O. 8. Thomas took under advisement the Webster Realty Co plea to reduce the State Bank building valuation from 84 000 to 26 000. Des Moines broker Carleton D. Beh bought the building for 66 000 two years ago, and the owners base their request on that price.
John J. Scholer of the Swiss cottage on the river bluff attended his first talking picture at a local theater. Deaf for years he had stopped going to films when talkies arrived. With earphones he tried them again and said, I guess I've been missing something.
DES MOINES Iowa lawmakers advance a bill to save counties two to four million dollars in taxes held by the supreme court as illegally levied from 1934 to 1997 The measure would legalize county auditors calculations of four years tax rates and bar refunds to taxpay ers while sharing any refunds on a 50 50 basis The bill targets millage rates set in 1934 without deducting revenue from the flat rate on funds and credits before levy spreading
There were no flames visible but dense smoke poured from Dr. B. G. Williams home in Oskaloosa as a fire gutted the interior. Damage was estimated at $10,000. Diamond jewelry valued at $1,000 was recovered from an upstairs room after the fire was extinguished. Dr. Williams heads Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa.
Mayor Mark Conkling and the city council endorse Police Chief H A Alber's drive to curb liquor and gambling in Des Moines. He blames business groups and the convention bureau for hindering enforcement by claiming Des Moines as a convention city.
Mrs C W Hoffman aged 76 died here one day after her brother John Parrish a Leon attorney. She was sister of Mary L Parrish a Des Moines school teacher and the late Judge Robert L Parrish of Des Moines.
Iowa farm price index rose to 7 percent of prewar average between December 15 and January 15 as demand for farm goods improved. Corn oats wheat hogs cattle and chickens advanced while butter eggs sheep and hay declined per Hebbt speed State college report.
Seven firemen were believed killed as a four story building collapsed in Syracuse after flames spread through the structure. Firefighters on the top floor were trapped as walls fell inward. three were rescued via an elevator shaft.
In Washington on February 3 the house approved extending for another year the Dies inquiry into un American activities by a 344 to 35 vote. Chairman Martin Dies of Texas hailed the outcome saying radicals and some officials sought to sabotage the probe.
Former Oregon Senator Fred Steiner died at Walter Reed hospital in Washington D C He was 55 and a Republican who resigned his Senate seat on January 31 1938 The report comes from United Press.
County Ministerial Association sets a meeting for Monday February 6 at 10 a m in the M C A. All county ministers and nearby clergy are invited. President Carl Klein will chair and direct the program.
Announcement changes the funeral place to United Presbyterian Church for W. C. Mayhew. Services remain on Saturday at 2 30 PM, moved from Sherman’s Funeral Home to the church.
Explosions at two central London subway stations sparked an urgent police search for bombs in all rail facilities. Parts of the stations were wrecked and shop windows shattered with at least eleven injured as authorities suspected an IRA linked terrorism outbreak. Mrs. Leland Carris departed for Kansas City to visit her sister E. W. Wolverton for a few weeks.

She claims she financed his release through music lessons while he was imprisoned for the preparedness day killings and notes no financial support from him since his release. Mrs. John Turner 61 died at her home in Columbus City after a heart attack. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2 pm at her home conducted by Mrs. Laura Newbern of the Apostolic church Davenport. Burial in Columbus City cemetery. Born Rhoda Anna Whittaker November 14 1877 in Oquawka Illinois she moved to Columbus City at sixteen. Survived by husband three sons William Harry Clyde all of Columbus Junction three daughters Mary Skipton Leona Miller Verda Reach all of Muscatine one sister Hattie Paxton Black Rock Arkansas eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. A daughter Mable Willit of Columbus City died earlier.
Assistant Secretary of the Navy Charles Edison testified before the House Naval Affairs Committee that fortifying Guam would materially strengthen fleet defense, while expressing hope the need for fortifications would be avoided. Edison is shown at right with Representative Carl Vinson of Georgia, committee chairman.
Hunger strike at San Quentin prison ends as most inmates return to meals. Cell by cell check shows about 2,260 prisoners abandoning the protest while 133 continue the hunger strike. Warden Smith says internal dissatisfaction with food may be the real cause behind the demonstrations.
The U S Treasury reported February 1 deficit at 2 046 095 405 dollars while the national debt hit an all time peak. The figure marks a new high for the deficit and reflects ongoing fiscal pressures facing the government.
The state board of education orders a survey of Iowa five state schools to study consolidating courses.
