Nashua reports Dr. Koch found a cat tangled in a car fan belt after the motor overheated on a rural call. He surmises the cat crawled through a grease pan opening and slept beside the warm engine.
Iowa City scholars defend Harry Hartwick's book The Foreground of American Fiction as valuable and not containing offensive passages, following its withdrawal from use at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Frank L. Mott argues the text lacks rank infidelity and remains worthwhile.
Mystery surrounds the disappearance of Charles Donald Doyle 25 a Schenectady New York sophomore in electrical engineering at Iowa State College. Dorm mates at Hughes hall say he was last seen January 20 believed to have left for Des Moines to seek eyeglasses fitting to cope with failing vision. He did not return to his New York home.
Funeral services for W C Mayhew will be held at Sherman s funeral home at 2 40 P M Saturday afternoon. Rev William M Nichol Jr will conduct at the Methodist church. Burial will be in Kim Grove cemetery. Mayhew died yesterday after a brief illness from a heart attack.
Keota 75 year old George McDonald, oldest area veteran, was found dead in his bed about 9 am. Coroner Irvin Reynolds ruled myocarditis likely killer since midnight. Funeral plans pending with service possible Saturday. McDonald served after Civil War uprisings and later settled in Lafayette township before moving to Keota. He left a wife Mae Clark, a son who died young, and daughter Kathryn White.
The Chamber of Commerce plans to print one million paper dollars to be distributed by Washington businesses. The funds will be used to purchase goods from local stores, then auctioned by the Chamber in March. A “vig days” committee led by Walter Rukgaber outlined dollar days on February 22, 24, and 26 and a spring opening in mid March.

Pat McGrath of Ottumwa was convicted by Justice J Bovee for failing to report an automobile accident. He received a ten dollar fine plus costs after a trial with County Attorney Richard Stewart prosecuting and Bailey Weber defending. The case centers on a late night January 13 crash on East Washington Street that killed John Mangold Jr. McGrath, who claimed his actions were lawful, left the city hall scene and vanished until the next day.
Margarete H. Kaiser of Berlin will lecture at the high school Friday evening as part of the Institute of International Understanding. A noted journalist and scholar, she studied law and political science in Berlin and has written widely on economic and social topics for European and American publications.
A Washington event on Surprise Day featured stores offering refunds on purchases. Otto Muntz 42 advisory chairman of the Greater Iowa committee died in Grinnell hospital from injuries after a car crash on Highway 6 two miles east of Brooklyn. His wife Mary Brandon Muntz 44 died last night in the same hospital. Lucie Schlesselman Victor driver of the other car was seriously injured. Five year old son suffered head and chest cuts. Muntz had been advisory chairman since Jan 15 1938 and led the commission after a 1937 ouster.
About 85 attendees joined a potluck dinner at the Christian church last night. The event featured mission-field greetings, a progress talk by L BE Dunlap, a radio-style quiz on church work, and brief remarks by Rev. Vernon Carter before a devotional period. Mrs N BE West led the kitchen with help from Mrs Claude Tucker and Mrs Em mett Hayes.
Dr. D C Barrett reports more than 600 residents already vaccinated in the county smallpox campaign. Clinics run at White Oak school for Dutch Creek and Clay townships and at Seventy-six Copter for Seventy-six township. Friday’s schedule includes Brighton township in the morning and Weat Cheeter school for Franklin and Cedar townships in the afternoon. Judge P J Sievers yesterday granted a decree of divorce in the case of Raymond Dawson against Martha Dawson. Miscellaneous court matters are coming to the attention of Judge Sievers this week in district court.
The Iowa Liquor Control Commission reports 36 million dollars in gross business and about 7.445 million in state profit over its first four and a half years. More than 5 million of the profit funds the general fund while the rest supports a cash balance and enforcement needs. The system operates 170 stores with 720 employees, and news notes political party changes among commissioners as party control shifts.
Warden Court Smith ordered a vote among 6,600 San Quentin inmates on whether to end the hunger strike over prison meals. About 1,590 accepted a compromise menu and joined breakfast in the mess hall. the rest received bread and water in their cells as guards delivered the question.
