United Press International reports generally fair weather for Iowa with a warming trend. Lows tonight range from near 10 in the northeast to near 20 in the south. Friday highs reach the middle 30s northeast to the 40s in the southwest, with sunny conditions and a bit warmer outlook for Saturday.
The Washington Community School District approves a new salary index base of 5600 tied to BA to MA plus 30 hours, raises maximum experience credit to eight years, and increases sick leave to 90 days. Extra duties pay drops to 100, four additional contract days are added, and the 182 day year becomes 194 days with two professional workdays for conferences and in service training.
Jerry Smith of Brighton describes a rain swollen river and a balky bus on side roads during his Americans Abroad exchange in Brazil. After landing in Rio de Janeiro, a 13 member bus faced a cliff lined route, a landslide, and a bridge submerged by three feet of water. The engine died in midstream and the group spent the night stranded as water receded.
MOSCOW UPI reports that wives and children of Soviet diplomats in Peking and other Chinese cities will be evacuated starting today as mobs besiege the Soviet Embassy in Peking for the eighth day. Russians expect China to seek a break in relations, while Moscow plans to recall most staff and trim the Chinese Embassy to skeleton status. The children's school inside the embassy compound has been closed.
Peking Radio and New China News Agency report Maoist forces crush opponents in Manchuria and seize Heilungkiang, claiming vast control over food and materials. Independent confirmation lacking, amid broader civil unrest and Sino Soviet tensions. China battles internal strife and regional upheaval with reports of clashes and Red Guard violence.
UPI reports heavy casualties as a U.S. Infantry 1st Division patrol fights its way out after being ambushed by Viet Cong in the Iron Triangle. The clash follows Cedar Falls with B52s bombing the area and subsequent Viet Cong losses across South Vietnam.
The Homemaker Home Health Aide Service starts February 1 in Washington County. Mary Smith R N Burlington supervised training for aides, with Raymond Glover as supervisor and Mildred Lee as health nurse. Service targets all county residents with fees based on income, ranging from nothing to two dollars per hour.
Frustration turns to resignation in Chicago after a third winter storm in six days blankets the city with 35 inches of snow. Schools in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana close while O Hare diverts 80 percent of flights. Traffic snarls, store shortages, and scattered accidents mark the day as residents dig out and brace for more wintry conditions.
Washington Junior High and the Washington Community district urge gamma globulin injections to guard seventh to ninth graders after a student fell ill. Nurse Eileen Jeffrey and county medical officer Dr. E J Vosika say there is no alarm and parents should arrange physician visits to obtain gamma globulin as the best preventive measure.
Lincoln Elementary in Washington suspended classes due to a power failure that cut electricity to the building. Officials said the short circuit in underground wiring between the service pole and the school disrupted heat, but power was restored and classes will resume tomorrow at the usual time.
