Passengers Leave Portuguese Ship in Recife After 12 Day Ordeal

The Santa Maria docked in Recife as more than 600 passengers and about 350 crewmen left after 12 days as hostages of rebel Capt. Henrique Galvao. Red Cross ambulances rushed the exhausted to hospitals while Brazilian marines guarded the pier and American, Brazilian, and Dutch navies monitored the unloading. Five Americans were aboard. one woman, Mrs Delbert Carl Smith, 37, of Johnstown Pennsylvania, was described as extremely nervous as her party left the ship.

Iowa House Committee Proposes Electing State School Board

The Iowa House Schools Committee voted 24 11 to abolish the current State Board of Public Instruction and replace it with a governor appointed seven member board from congressional districts due to census changes. The plan faces opposition from Rep Ray Cunningham and rep Keith Dunton who warn it harms schools. Paul Johnston leads the current board with Harry M Reed chairing.

Macmillan to Visit Kennedy at White House in April

Iowa Governor Proposes 18 Million Annual Budget Increase

Gov Norman A. Erbe proposed an 18 million dollar per year budget rise to 189.43 million with no tax increase. Most funds would go to education including a near 25 percent boost to local school districts, funded by growth and surplus use. He urged living within income and avoiding deficit spending as the legislature weighs allocations and tax policy.

Des Moines Teen Slaying Tied to Robbery Confession

Earl Edward Thompson 26 of Wichita Falls Texas faces a robbery with aggravation charge in Des Moines municipal court after confessing to staging two service station holdups. He admitted abducting 16 year old Joe E Dickson Jr forcing him into a car, then firing a shot in a roadside area as the youth tried to flee. Dickson's body was later found southeast of Waukee. Thompson awaits arraignment in Dallas County on murder charges. He was held on a $50,000 bond.

Washington County offers a three day Farm Management Short Course starting February 9 at the YMCA Washington. Nearly 50 farmers have enrolled of 75 capacity. Extension staff and economists will lead sessions on farm management costs returns credit and machinery and crop livestock program fits. Kennedy seeks multi billion road to recovery plan

In a 7500 word message to Congress on April Kennedy urged a multi billion dollar road to recovery program. It calls for boosting social security benefits for 4.6 million people and extending unemployment. The plan seeks higher minimum wage to 1.25 an hour and faster federal spending on highways and public works. Kennedy notes unemployment rose by 900000 in January to about 5.4 million and warns of serious winter job losses.

Des Moines Men Bound Over On Septic Tank Charges

Two Des Moines men, William Paul Thompson and Emmet Leroy Weatherly, were bound over to the grand jury under a $2,000 bond after being arrested by county officers. They appeared before Justice Glenn Holden. The sheriff’s office received complaints that the pair overcharged county residents for septic tank cleaning work. prosecutors considered possible charges.

A United Press International report details a sweeping Iowa snowstorm that buried counties from Spencer to Ottumwa under up to eleven inches. One death occurred when a car collided with a drifting, snowed highway near Sheldon as conditions worsened across the state.
