The Santa Maria docked in Recife as more than 600 passengers and about 350 crewmen left after 12 days as hostages of rebel Capt. Henrique Galvao. Red Cross ambulances rushed the exhausted to hospitals while Brazilian marines guarded the pier and American, Brazilian, and Dutch navies monitored the unloading. Five Americans were aboard. one woman, Mrs Delbert Carl Smith, 37, of Johnstown Pennsylvania, was described as extremely nervous as her party left the ship.

Earl Edward Thompson 26 of Wichita Falls Texas faces a robbery with aggravation charge in Des Moines municipal court after confessing to staging two service station holdups. He admitted abducting 16 year old Joe E Dickson Jr forcing him into a car, then firing a shot in a roadside area as the youth tried to flee. Dickson's body was later found southeast of Waukee.
