Segregationists Force Family Out Of New Orleans
In New Orleans segregationists won their bid to restore the white-only boycott at McDonogh 19 Elementary, prompting John Thompson and his six children to move overnight. His sons Gregory and Michael, ages 9 and 8, were among the first white students in McDonogh since November 17, the district’s integration start. Thompson, a Walgreens soda fountain manager earning about 70 dollars weekly, requested a transfer to another city. Walgreens would not disclose the destination. Thompson’s wife and children faced jeers from about a dozen women at the school as they arrived for classes.

A 16 year old Des Moines tech high school junior was forced from a bandit's car on a gravel road in sub freezing weather. Police found the teen’s jacket shoes and billfold in a car linked to Joe L Tate 27 who was arrested after two service station holdups. Tate said he stole the youth clothing and billfold but could not recall details. He claimed he blacked out after forcing the boy from the car near interstate 35 west of Des Moines near Cumming. Tate was captured after a pursuit ending in a crash and is jailed on identification papers with a revolver and about $50 found.
