Iowa senators debated a concurrent resolution by Senator Frailey to appoint a governor's committee to study the poor relief system. The panel would report to the general assembly in two years. The measure passed 33 to 11 amid arguments over urban versus rural poverty.
Washington high school hosts two Friday night basketball games with Kalona, a Lit tle Six clash against Mt. Pleasant, and a Washington girls bout with Kalona. Between halves, boys and girls acts plus a large band performance are planned, aiming for a big crowd and a double victory.
Mrs John Davis and her daughter Mrs Ed Gibson travel to Verdi this morning to spend several days at the farm. Mrs Davis plans to arrange matters for a move to Des Moines with her daughter soon. The text notes a new motor driven roller skate in Europe.

John Kos born in Bohemia March 2 1845 died at Washington County Hospital after weeks of illness. Immigrant with family around 1865 they first lived in Iowa City then Richmond county later moved to Washington over forty years ago. He married Anna Kallaus who died four years ago. Survived by sons Melo Washington John Des Moines and Laudie.
Ames Iowa Feb 2 Dean C F Curtis of Iowa State College told visitors at the 25th annual farm and home week that agriculture cannot be a peasant system. He urged farmer control of marketing, better farm credit, inland waterways to cut transport costs, and tariff protections to stabilize American markets for farmers.
Drilling in Spain has yielded no material results so far though traces of oil have been found in various areas. Enthusiasts hope a future discovery will meet domestic needs and support exports. Funeral services for Mr. Kos will be held Thursday at 2:80 pm at L. A. Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Grove cemetery.
In Bedford Iowa the death of 17 year old Pansy Turnbull remains unresolved as county officials move to quash assault charges against Howard and Lupton. Howard was previously tried and acquitted of first degree murder related to her death. The case involves charges tied to a petting party and an automobile ride near Clearfield. A Ringgold county coroner’s jury found death from injuries after she jumped from a moving car to save her honor. The crime is alleged to have occurred in Taylor county with four youths and an elderly constable involved.
Elwood W. Detrick, Washington Y M C A physical director, resigned to take a post as physical director at the Y M C A in Washington Court House Ohio. He will leave with a part time assistant and return to former home in Ohio. His departure follows a telegram confirming his election and a recent visit to the Ohio town. His family has integrated into Washington life and staff and boys regret his departure.
Prince Omwah and his company at the Graham theater presented a mystery show to a well filled audience. The magician answered questions from attendees and performed optical illusions and various tricks.
Peking dispatches report Eugene Chen, nationalist foreign minister, urged Britain to stop concentrating troops and warships on Shanghai. He warned that unless Britain shifts its stance the Shanghai issue and concessions at Hankow may stall. Negotiations between Chen and British officials appeared near conclusion but were halted over troop movements.
Mrs Clinton R De Witt died in a Thermopolis Wyoming hospital after an operation on Monday. Marjorie Cunningham born August 18 1599 attended Washington schools and graduated 1917. She earned a master’s degree 1923 and trained as a hospital dietitian at Massachusetts General Hospital. She leaves her parents a sister and was married July 13 1926 to Clinton KR De Witt. Funeral services will be held here with arrival of the body pending and the husband’s return from Washington likely Saturday.

Ralph Shannon led the program with tunes on a hand saw, the Elgar sisters sang, and Mrs. Tracy Willips accompanied.
