The Washington Jaycees will run their annual Christmas tree pickup and disposal starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday January 4. Residents should place trees at the end of their block to assist the operation.
Authorities seek Guillermo Santana 23 after an escape from University Hospitals Iowa City while an inmate from Oakdale Iowa Security Medical Facility. Santana faces a manslaughter charge in Sioux City. described as 5'8" Caucasian 167 pounds with brown hair and a distinctive scar and burn mark. He wore an insulated gold jacket grey trousers and black shoes.
Bob Hope said his proposal to free American prisoners in North Vietnam is a longshot but not yet rejected. He spoke on returning to Van Nuys after a Christmas tour of U S bases overseas. His plan would trade the prisoners for ten million dollars to aid North Vietnamese children.
John Cain sues the Dubuque Community School District and bus driver Robert McVoland for 550000 claiming negligence after his eight year old son Dale lost part of his left leg when a bicycle collided with a school bus. The boy required amputation of his foot and part of the leg after the wheels crushed him.
New York First National City Bank cut its base lending rate to 5 percent for the week ahead, joining other banks in abandoning the prime rate for a floating system tied to the dealer rate on 90 day commercial paper.
Property taxes for 1971 assessments payable in 1972 are reduced in three area districts. Washington Community Schools set 53.341 mills, Mid-Prairie drops from 53.500 to 49.842, and Highland falls from 56.870 to 56.475 mills as state aid increases.

Actor Pete Duel of Alias Smith and Jones fame was found shot in his Hollywood Hills living room near a Christmas tree. Police say a .38 revolver was nearby and believe the death could be homicide or self-inflicted. A woman acquaintance who was present alerted police.
The Burlington Liars Club awards honor to winners and honorable mentions. John Woolley of Racine is the world champion liar claiming a Packers punt returner caused penalties. Other honorees include Col Richard W Fox of Lacomb Oregon Pat Canal of Thunder Bay Ontario and residents T R Anderson Clement Miller.
